It seems if some Black women feel like the fact that Hancock's love interest in the film was a White woman was a front on their female Blackness. The women who fall into this category are in the small minority, but the idea that they are 'offended' by this shows their racial bias. After all, it's well known that the two biggest detractors of BM/WW relationships are White men, and Black women. It's hypocritical however, when several of Halle Berry's latest films, her love interests where White men. Kerry Washington, a well-known Black actress, has a White husband in her latest film titled, "Lakeview Terrance." Will some of these bitter Black women complain about that film? I doubt it. It's a blatant double-standard where Black women can swoon over White men and be applauded as being "progressive and thinking outside the box." Yet, a Black man is unable to swoon over a White woman without fierce accusations of self-hatred and racial betrayal. If the interracial dating scene is ever going to be uncluttered then this biting double-standard must come to a close. Sooner rather than later. If anything, the Black community should be concerned with is how AIDS is running rampant in some neighborhoods, young Black men murdering one another, and the education gap between Black students and White/Asian students. Jerome dating Becky should be the least of our concerns. We have other, more important, priorities.
What else is new??? On the fo' real, there ain't any love/sex scenes bet. Will & Charlize characters in the flick...so, WTF!!?? The Kid Rasta 8)
Excellent post! And, there is a huge double standard in the movie industry and (sometimes) the TV industry (though television has been a lot better this year). I was the first to post a thread about the double standard surrounding "Hancock." Still, we have to celebrate the larger reality that my white girlfriend and other white women made me realize: Black-men and white-women are increasingly dating (and marrying or cohabitating) across color lines like never before. White women have become far more independent with jobs and careers of their own. So, they can date who they want. Interracial couples are seeing less opposition than even 10 short years ago (I've seen this firsthand). Black men are finding more white women saying "yes" to them socially. The women that used to say no say yes today. I mentioned in an earlier post that I went to see Hancock at an odd time to avoid a large, crowded theatre. Even in an audience of just 25 people, sure enough there was still a BM/WF couple in attendance sitting 5 seats away from me. Vaughn, BM/WF is absolutely everywhere...from here to Britain to Germany. You cannot go into a diverse city or suburb without seeing a fair number of BM/WF couples. You can find them in the deep south, Texas, everywhere. So, while the movie industry does not recognize what is directly in front of their faces, I'd much rather have a huge, growing number of BM/WF relationships in real life versus the fantasy of the movie screen. Even when you look at the Alex Rodriguez scandal (Alex is from the Dominican Republic and likely has some Black ancestry in him, Alex wife left him to find shelter in the arms of Lenny Kravitz), the two men are Black men while the two women (including Madonna) are White or White-Hispanic. There were a couple of movies in the sixties that portrayed BM with WF. But, the reality at that time was there were very few real BM/WF couples at that time. There are today!!! LOL!!! I'm amazed that White-men in Hollywood continue to act like it's 1945. But, White-women see the world completely differently when it comes to their growing relationship with Black-men. That mutual physical attraction is building a bridge between BM and WW. I can easily deal with that and simply avoid going to the theatre (only about 3% of the entire nation goes to out to see a movie anyway). If you want to fight back, don't subscribe to too many cable movie channels and watch what you buy on DVD. That's where most of their profit comes from, BTW, not the movie theatre. I only pay for movies on a pay per view basis...saves money, too. A drop in sales will get their attention.
Lets go back to calling those type of black women trolls, because it is not all of them. Like I said it is a small number that the media blew up into it being big, just like they did with the whole basketball players mainly be with white women.
People have a right to support film projects as they please, so why depend on black women if they are grossly outnumbered by white women?
I haven't heard any complaints about Hancock except on this website, likely due to most of you lacking the mental wherewithal to criticize things that actually matter. As I stated earlier and elsewhere, I could care less about this issue but for the sake of humoring the topic, I'll tackle it again. In real life, which for some of us is more important, Will Smith is married to a black woman and has three children. It is his second marriage to a black woman. After his first ended in failure, he could've elected to date or marry any kind of woman he pleased. He is a multi-millionaire and movie star, which gives him a level of options that most men (that's you buddy) will never see let alone touch. Instead of a European supermodel, he pursued and won Jada Pinkett. No one in the black community, be it male or female, has any justifiable grounds for criticizing Will Smith.
Those black women are mad over nonething. Where were they when Monster's Ball came out? Crickets chirped.
My point exactly, Porcelain (expressed in another thread). Save The Last Dance, with Sean Patrick Thomas and Julia Stiles, was a big hit for women of all colors. That movie had kissing, hugging, and sexual content between a black man and a white woman, and people loved it....that movie made over 100 million dollars. It was a great movie with a great storyline. Hancock, despite the premise of Will Smith and Charlize Theron being former married lovers, did not even have a handshake between the two. The movie was too concerned about not offending SOME black women and some white men. The film critics plainly state that the movie lacked direction and could have been much better. They are saying that Will Smith was handed a terrible script. Had the movie gone further into the relationship of Will and Charlize (two people who are great friends in real life), the movie would have been 1000 times better. They could have used the real relationship between the two to produce some great acting. You are right: If the movie industry would just stop trying to not offend bigots, they would produce far better movies. Right now, I can't find one good movie this summer. Very sad.
Ive been wondering about Save the last dance, and what made hollyweird give them the "go" for that movie Why did they let that movie "slide"? Because it was hiphop themed? Ive also noticed that the same white chick in "save the last dance" was also used in the movie "O" for the interracial relationship.... There was a better looking white chick in "save the last dance 2" with Colombus short but it didnt come out in the theaters
You know she held wills hand when he was lying on the hospital bed in the movie. But like sat said it is just a movie let's deal with real life the black women I know loved Hancock. Don't believe the hype.
On other sites I also read the opinion of black men saying the movie was racist. I havent seen it and probably wont see it in future either
