Yes, this conflation of citizen and consumer produces people who, instead of a sense of obligation or respect for others, go through society like a disgruntled shopper the day after Thanksgiving, demanding what they want, when they want it and how they want it. Crossing this person is a dangerous thing to do. Someone with the self-control of a 2-year old and deadly force at his disposal. Giving this person a firearm? Now THAT'S responsible behavior.

Yeah, the economy and social breakdown and other factors have to be pushing people to the breaking point. And throwing easy access to guns into the mix and you've got a recipe for havoc.
