Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has quietly declared April 2010 Confederate History Month, bringing back a designation in Virginia that his two Democratic predecessors -- Mark Warner and Tim Kaine -- refused to do.

Republican governors George Allen and Jim Gilmore issued similar proclamations. But in 2002, Warner broke with their action, calling such proclamations, a "lightning rod" that does not help bridge divisions between whites and blacks in Virginia.

This year's proclamation was requested by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A representative of the group said the group has known since it interviewed McDonnell when he was running for attorney general in 2005 that he was likely to respond differently than Warner or Kaine.

"We've known for quite some time we had a good opportunity should he ascend the governorship," Brandon Dorsey said. "We basically decided to bide our time and wait until we had more favorable politicians in Richmond."

Dorsey said the governor's stamp of approval would help the group publicize the month and aide tourism efforts in the state

I keep saying it. Every time people celebrate the confederacy, Old Abe rolls in his grave.

Life sucks here in the commonwealth!!!

McDonnell is a whack job, he got a number of independents to vote for him in the gubernatorial race and just snowed everyone.

Why are some bigots still fighting the Civil War? Do they wish the SOuth had won???

He issued a effin proclamation to honor those soldiers who died fighting for the confederacy, but not once did he mention the role slavery played in the war!!.:smt076

    Shame on you, McDOnnell!!:smt018

You are making White folks look retarded~~!:smt026

Look, there's a Black president now, can we leave these redneck white folks and their damn flag alone? Shit. Negroes always complaining. I wish we bitched this much about subpar schools, gang violence, black on black crime, the mainstreaming of hood/project/ghetto behavior, and incarceration rates for black men.

When these things affect you. That is when you bitch. It is all relative.

  9. Black people within the state of Virigina should use the month by honoring the likes of Gabriel Prossor and Nat Turner...

I didn't forfeit my right to be offended because we've temporarily got a Black President.

I'm still a citizen who lives in the state of Virginia. So yeah, I've got a problem with a Governor who claims there were more 'important' issues than slavery that caused in the Civil War.

Historians will tell you that the civil war was over states' rights.

It's BS. It was about the states' right to give their residents the right to OWN other people...according to the constitution, this is not something the states have the right to do.

I agree there are more pressing issues to worry about, though. There will always be a few people who don't get it, and I don't know that anything will ever change their minds. We can just hope society transmits the message that all are created equal to these peoples' offspring.

nothing wrong with it, its history, and if we dont know it we are doomed to repeat it. and also we have an AA history month, so we should be as tolerant as we want others to be.

Who is this we? I don't remember agreeing to black history month. We don't celebrate the history of the ENEMY. Next, We will have a brit month or a nazi month or bin laden month. They were the enemy. They loss. We mention them as being the losers in our american history and that is all. I mean they always get a mention when we talk about old abe kicking their butts. They should be happy about that.

we as in all society. its a long time saying, if we dont knwo our History we are doomed to repeat it.

and sure we do celebrate the history of the enemy, right now we (our society) runs tv program ad naseum about Islam and their culture as if it were to be praised. we(our society) praises thugs, bad behavior in media, violence, drugs, nazis, etc and i dont see us(our society) standing up against it. so yes we(our society) glorifies the enemy in our midst. If we despised it we would be working to get rid of all of it, but we dont we glorify it and ridicule it at the same time. Our society does, doesnt mean each individual does.
