Getting Phone Numbers...

I'm just curious.. if you ask for a phone number, do you call it? It isn't often that I have even thought for a moment about it, because usually I don't give out my phone number immediately, depending on if it is someone I think has the opportunity to bump into me again.. and on the net.. well I have long had a rule, NO phone number the first time we talk, no matter how great a conversation goes. I've always figured if a guy is willing to wait, well he might be worth getting to know. If he keeps asking and whines when he doesn't get it, well there you go.. red flag..

So normally when I do give out a phone number I get a call back pretty fast.

I have never asked a guy for a phone number, since USUALLY, he's already asked for mine, so I let him call first..

ok. here is what I am curious about.. and it isn't a big deal, just trying to figure out how a man's mind thinks..

here is the setting.. I was just looking at apartments to move into and as I was just about to get into my car, a guy is driving by from the opposite direction. He stops right there in traffic, rolls down his window and told me

"If anyone hasn't told you, you are beautiful yet today, let me be the first". I smiled and thanked him and proceeded to get into my car. He moves he car forward about a foot and stops again.. (and he is now stopping traffic waiting on him).. asked me if I am single.. to which I said yes..

so he pulls his car around and parks in behind me and gets out to talk to me face to face.. Now he wants my phone number..

Ok.. no rule #1 since I may never see this guy again.. so I gave him my number. Since I know little about him, I actually gave him my work number. I told him it was my work number and that I was heading home (which at this point is still a distance away), so he asked when he could call, see about us doing lunch.. or something.. maybe a jacuzzi.. lol. I said the jacuzzi was a bit soon, but I'd be ok with lunch.. so I told him call me Monday or Tuesday...

The guy seemed punch drunk happy to have the number..

    But he never called..

I can't say its even a big deal he didn't. But I must admit, I find myself curious, why get a number if you aren't going to call?

Do you call if you ask for a number?

Usually if I don't call it means I lost the number. It used to happen a lot before I got my cell phone, when I used to just get numbers on whatever paper was available.

Sassy, if this happened recently, say within a few days, he could be trying to time his call so as to not appear "eager".

Yeah, I did wonder if he might have lost it. I wrote my number on an envelope I had in my purse.

Its actually been over a month, so I am not even looking for him to call any longer..

unless he did lose it and maybe finds it when he cleans his car out or something..

I just wondered if some players just like to collect numbers.. but never plan to call.

Yeah.... Can you say “Serial Killer”?
    Just joking!

We can rule out “shy” because if he stopped and pulled a U-turn, he does not have small inhibitions.
Some guys really do the old “hurry up and wait” thing, where they want you to hurry up and be ready to like them but now you have to wait for them to show you any interest. This is a classic Player move.

He may be a great guy but he just lost your number. Not much you can do about that.

    I don't know.

Let me ask you this: Why didn't you get his phone number or e-mail address?
It sounds like he had something that you liked so why not go that extra step?
Was it that classic “You're the man and I'm the woman so I give you the okay but now you must do all of the chasing.” move?

    I don't know.

If something like that happens again, will you get his number?

Interesting question.. I think because we didn't talk long, I really didn't have time to think about it. At first he wanted to do lunch that day and I was actually free to have left to go then, but he said he was actually on an errand he had to finish and wouldn't be free for 20 minutes, so I said I'd meet him somewhere in say half an hour..

He seemed apprehensive about that. Maybe he thought I'd stand him up. But I wouldn't have. That was when he wanted my phone number to call me later. I totally agreed to do lunch the following week, but like I said its been a month.

Should I have gotten his phone number. I guess I should have. I've just never needed to. Guys have always called me if they got my number. It isn't that I want or need to be chased, or that isn't the plan any way. If he had given me his number when he had taken mine, I would have put it in my cell phone and saved it.

I guess I'm old school.. I like a guy to call first and they always have, so I never even had to think about it before.

"why would you ask for a phone number if you are not going to call it?"

Because for a lot of men, getting a number is more important than actually talking to the woman...it's a game...its "catch n' release fishing", etc..

Based on his jacuzzi comment...you're better off without him.

lol.. yeah.. I thought about that too..

maybe he decided not to bother when I said too soon for a jacuzzi...

my rule of thumb is always get the guys phone number so I can call him....there have been too many that don't call back.
