I've noticed lately there seems to be lack of true gentlemen in today's society. A few months ago, my husband and I were at a restaurant and there was a bit of a wait to be seated. We decided to wait outside - where there were some other people waiting as well. Long story short, there was one bench full of about five 20-something yr old dudes, meanwhile 2 ladies (probably in their 70s) were being forced to stand. Rude.

Then, this morning, as I'm walking into my office building, hands full...me and a dude come to a door at the same time. We both stop, wait a second, and he gives me this look like "are you gonna open the door or not?"...so, hands full, I open the door, and then without so much as a 'thank you', he proceeds to walk through like it was owed to him or something.

I'm not really sure what my point is, other than wanting to know if 1. Men, do you guys generally hold the door open for a lady or give up your seat for a lady when the situation calls? and 2. Ladies, how often do you run into gentlemen vs the opposite?

yes i do i very courteous by then again there is a rise is stuck up unappreciative type women that believe they dont need a man for anything. hence they angry if your try and open the door tho its not happened to me i heard stories about these particular type of women.

yeah, i had a feeling this would get brought up. and yes, i've seen women like that - i personally think it's a shame. i hate that a select few bad attitudes have discouraged a lot of men to be the gentleman they want to be...but i guess that's another thread, lol.

i'm a sucker for a man who will open the door, give up his seat, and/or who just makes a conscious effort to be a gentleman. i think it's awesome. my daddy set that example for me while i was growing up, and thank God i married a man who is a gentleman in every sense of the word. my husband is actually the ONLY man who has ever opened the car door for me...and he still does it after almost 12 years. :smt050

I tend to be pretty heavy on the nice guy approach by opening doors and all that. It's been pretty much innate for me since I was young. I did that for my parents and siblings, especially my mom since she always dragged us around when shopping was necessary.

I get what you are saying...for the guys it is a damn if you do and damn if you dont.

feminism has killed chivilary because men and women dont know if they should or shouldnt. I tend to open doors ( at the store or something) but when it comes to the car door I dont depending on the situation

lol @ being dragged around shopping with your mom. the joys of childhood, right?

yeah, the door thing didn't bother me as much as the dummies on the bench with the older ladies having to stand. that just pissed me off...and my husband too. you'd think their mommas would have raised them better, but guess not. it's a shame. :smt011

I can dig what you are saying on that. To give them benefit of the doubt I would hope they wasnt thinking about it. you know young folks dont think too much. they tend to be selfish and self centered.

I know, right? especially the southern thing - you'd think that alone would make some kind of a difference, but guess not. of course, we have a major university here, so during the fall and spring, most of the population is students who are probably not from the south so that might play into it as well. who knows. i figured it'd be common courtesy though in most situations. :smt102 guess i'm wrong, lol.

Yeah, the joys of childhood all right.

I did a lot more than that actually. Sometimes I even took it a step further and showed some sense of courtesy, even without thought. Random Acts of Kindness maybe?

To be honest I used to open doors for all strangers, give my seat to elderly, offer my spot on the elevator to a preggos, blah, blah, & several folks thought I was a southerner, I guess these things are considered a character of southern gentlemen.

Anyhoo, a lot of folks think they are entitled to that treatment, especially young pretty women, they think you owe that to them & that is their God given rights. So what I do these days, I quickly study your face and try to read you in nano sec and if I think you're worthy of it then I will provide the service otherwise, meh.....

yup, that good 'ole sense of entitlement...gotta love it, lol. i never expect a man (or anybody) to open the door for me, but i think it's awesome when they do, and i always take advantage of it and always say "thank you" with a big white girl smile, lol. i gladly hold the door for people behind me and thank people when they're kind enough to return the favor. shoot, i even offer up my seat for my elders - men and women...but then again, i was taught common courtesy growing up in the south and that's just how we do things down here. ;)
