In discussing this topic with a friend of mine, I have come to the following crossroad in my thinking. To what extent do the retention of traditional gender roles assume inequality? I tend to think that the equality is found in the (honest) opinion of both partners each thinking themself the equal of the other, the ability to mutually determine the best course of action and a societal structure which supports that. A lack of expectation as to my activities and a recognition of my autonomy, personal skills and desire is mostly what I find myself needing. I suppose, really, it's about finding someone with similar values regarding not only gender roles, but most other aspects of life also. Anyway... To what extent do you reject traditional gender roles as a sign of obsolete thinking? To what extent do you fulfil traditional gender roles and, on introspection, do you feel this is an expectation? Do you feel as though things are, typically, equal between men and women? Anything else you have to add on the topic...
Oh, this is gonna be interesting. I just covered gender roles in my anthro class a couple weeks ago. I'll reply to this when I get back home.
