Exactly, I cannot pick up a loaf of bread without some magazine telling the world what she is doing with her vagina this week.
I was because usually where a disease originates do you find people with most immunity to it. Guess I was wrong this one.
It is a great question actually, when HIV was first discovered or diagnosed as disease the first question that scientist asked was where did this come from? If it came from here how long has it been here and of course are some people here immune? Those are the same questions that Scientists asked. Followed by; Exactly how did a monkey virus get into people? Did a person get cut while killing a chimp? Could that alone cause an epidemic this size? If the virus comes from a type of chimp found only in West Africa, why is it that the first AIDS cases arose in Central Africa, hundreds of miles away? If people have been killing chimps for food for centuries didn't an epidemic hit earlier? Those last questions are still a mystery. Scientific thinking begins with questions, predictions and observations. So you are not wrong.
know this shouldn't matter but it has to be said. Anyone else surprised the first person to be cured from HIV was white when pandemic us mostly affecting Africans?
Not surprised in the least, because if you read the article, it clearly states he had leukemia. One of the remedies is a Bone marrow transplant. By sheer luck, his donor was one of those rare 1% WHITES immune to HIV. I'd garner the odds are statistically negligible that of an HIV+ African with Leukemia would get a bone Marrow transplant from a White donor who derives from pool of 1% of WHITES immune to HIV.
Here is something interesting in 2006 a group of Kenyan women all prostitutes were thought to be immune. These female sex workers apparently carry a gene that protects them from contracting HIV. In a study over three years, 850 prostitute where followed and given regular test for HIV, but at least 130 did not test positive for the virus, despite all having unprotected sex with known HIV positive clients. Now when I first heard about this I did not consider the fact that basically these researchers witnessed these women essentially commit suicide. But before I digress. Here is the update. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/619316.stm
What a shame their theory didn't realize. I can imagine why they got excited over the numbers...that was almost 1 in 8...way better than the estimated 1 in 100 in the Caucasian example. Frankly though I find their excuse to justify their theory imploding to be somewhat insulting to intelligence....I mean these women weren't bee-keepers avoiding anaphylactic shock by frequent exposures to stings. (Then again, maybe it is similar). I do notice the numbers keep changing though. First it was 130, then only 45 were being followed.
My guess it would have been included if their theory proved correct. The OP story took 5yrs before announcement. Obviously, lots of waiting time before official results are released. In particular, Kenya might have also requested tangible research evidence before being tied prematurely to explosive news their hookers are immune despite having sex with Aids-carrying Johns (and splashed all over thew world)....Unless it was genuine.
