It doesn't effect their society so why should they care.
People are in this no win sprint to Olympus thinking they'll ascend and leave everyone behind not realizing we are tied to each other either directly or indirectly but unfortunately people are easily distracted and have memories as long as the life span of gnat

Makes me wonder: do they have some other life-sustaining planet they're all getting ready to leave for?

    Europa?
The absolute most frustrating thing about all of this is that there is more than enough for everyone to live well. I mean extremely well, homes, education, entertainment, food, water, healthcare, you name it. The technology is scaling to the point EVERYONE's basic needs can be met. Can everyone have an Ipad and a Lexus? No
But everyone can have a laptop and a car. Google the insane amount of used cars just sitting around not being used by anyone for anything. There's so much available food we fucking food we burn the excess amounts. We waste for more than most countries actually use. It's either complete insanity or complete incompetence.

Or a bit of both with some malice and greed thrown in?

Or just complete and utter apathy. Most of the things I advocate for don't directly effect me at all. I'm pretty insulated knock on wood but it doesn't stop me from recognizing life isn't just about me, there are people hungry and fucking homeless in a country where there are more homes than homeless. I really wonder how many people actually sit down and think about this more importantly how many people does it inspire to act.

Sadly not enough. And I don't think electoral politics are sufficient to solve everything either.
