I donate to quite a few places. One is the Gospel Mission that I have been involved with for 6 years. I donate to St Jude's and others as well.
I have been interested in micro loans for a while and used to use Kiva.org for micro loans type donations to start small businesses - until I realized what interest they charge. I now use http://www.rotarianmicrocredit.org (Im not a rotary person) but am hoping someone know something more about this type of donation to guide me to a perhaps better venue?

Any other favorite donations, please post. I think a lot of us wants to donate but its a really treacherous venue full of scams etc. I would love to hear from y'all about this.

that's good but this micro loan thingy has been in the spotlight recently, it's not only a quick way to start ur own company,it's also a quick way to get great debts..

I totally agree, its full of scams. I'm trying to find one that is not....
    Is there one???

btw - a little help is to write in your donation etc with the word :scam: after it in the search engine if someone doesn't know that already.. it distills out a lot but its not enough.

  4. www.restavekfreedom.orgThese guys do wonderful things for kids in Haiti. Definitely my favorite charity.

My most recent donation (albeit a small one) was to www.bricksforbears.org.au... also a very worthwhile cause.

I also donate regularly to Amnesty International.

    To give is good :smt001

    Nice thread geeky :)

    I donate to:

    Church of Christ India (CCI)

Church of Christ Nigeria (Good News Nigeria)

I send my donations to the men who handle the funds & who actually travel to these places & work directly with the people who lead the local congregations there.

When I was employed it was Médecins Sans Frontières ... it was a shame to cancel, but I'm sure I can start up again soon. If I was a nurse or doctor I'd do that shit, for sure.

Due to the amount of on going charity scams I don't donate money anymore. Too many people take advantage of people in crisis so now I donate food to the Salvation Army. 40 dollars worth of oatmeal and canned goods. I wish I could do more but....

Awesome! I love to see some more, its great to have more ideas about charities to consider for donations.

One can donate time, which I think is even more important. Local shelters etc always need help.
I don't know how many sandwiches Ive made for the gospel mission. A friend and I are thinking of doing Habitat for Humanity.. She spent her vacation at an orphanage in Mexico 2 summers ago. A local church set it up so that you pay your way and worked to get the orphanage in good shape and up and running. I was thinking of doing something like that once I get my green card sorted out.

We saw the money raised by countries and private donations from all over the world go to Haiti, and look at them, they are still in the worst of conditions, the money is not being used to help these people, it's sitting and drawing interest somewhere because there is a distribution problem, no one to oversee the right thing to be done for these suffering people. Because of this travesity, my money goes to our Church, who in turn does many mission trips all over the world and we constantly help the homeless on our streets. We have so many that need help, every street corner has at least 2-3 at all times of the day, begging for help. How can we turn our back on our own....we can't and we are fortunate enough that we don't.
