Interesting.I just learned today that one of Mexico's first Presidents was half black

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicente_Guerrero

Vicente Guerrero August 10, 1782 – February 14, 1831) was one of the leading revolutionary generals of the Mexican War of Independence. He fought against Spain for independence in the early 19th century, and later served as President of Mexico. He was also the grandfather of the Mexican politician and intellectual Vicente Riva Palacio.

Pushkin's grandfather was probably born somewhere around present day Chad. He wasn't "Ethiopian" in its proper sense.

And colonial Mexico was home to countless Africans. When you add the Mulattoes (African and Spanish parents), the Zambos (African and Native parents) and Chinos (Mulatto and Native parents), there were probably even more than the United States. Africans were crucial to Mexican independence. The manumission movement for African slaves in many ways expedited recruitment in their wars against the Spanish. After the country won their independence, the government made it a point to abolish the caste system, and they succeeded for the most part.

True. Veracruz State is more Caribbean than 'Mexican' in terms of racial makeup, food, customs, etc.

I knew Puerto Rico had a lot of Africans I'm just learning about Mexico. Thanks for the info. I read that Mexico abolished slavery before the US and Mexico's government welcomed runaway slaves from the south. Interesting stuff as I have never read much about the history of Mexico.

Remember California was considered Mexican territory. Many people don't realize over half the founders of Los Angeles (26 of the 46) were either black or mulatto. They were mainly retired officers from the Spanish military.

MQ and R9968,had you seen the tv documentaries of Blacks in Latin America by Henry Louis Gates? I saw it and even though I know about it I learn something every day. Karris,I know about Pushkin and some Russians don't even believe he was Black.
