A German teenager fled from her own birthday party after more than 1,500 guests turned up, shortly followed by 100 police officers.

The girl, identified only as Thessa, went into hiding after forgetting to set her party as 'private' on Facebook meaning she got a lot more than she bargained for.

Eleven people were temporarily detained by officers and one policeman was injured.

Firefighters had to put out two fires at the girl's 16th birthday party in Hamburg and dozens of girls had to be treated after their feet were cut on broken glass.

Despite all the drama, police Spokesman Mirko Streiber that 'nonetheless the party was a hit'.

Thessa had only wanted to ask a handful of friends over to her home but she mistakenly put the event to 'open' and soon 15,000 people confirmed they would attend.

When her parents found out, they made her cancel the party, told the authorities what had happened and hired a private security firm to protect their home on Friday night, according to German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

Despite public announcements across the city that the party had been cancelled, 1,500 teens and young adults still turned up on the street in front of Thessa's home.

Mr Streiber said: 'We had cordoned off the house, some 100 police were on the ground, four of them on horses - but that did not keep the kids from celebrating.'

Some of the partygoers held signs asking 'Where is Thessa?' chanting 'Thessa, celebrating a birthday is not a crime', while others brought birthday presents and homemade cupcakes.

Once police officer was slightly injured when he tried to stop a party reveller from breaking the Mercedes-Benz logo from his patrol car.

Thessa, however, was nowhere to be seen and police confirmed she 'was not at home that night' and she is believed to have celebrated quietly at her grandparents' house.

One partygoer even wrote a song in Thessa's honour and used it to soundtrack his coverage of the event on his YouTube channel, available [above].

From what I understand, it's not an uncommon practice on Facebook (and Twitter). Parties advertised as open, that it.

We get lots of FLASH MOBS in our city, also. Cops now scan Twitter for upcoming events to hoard off the stamping influx, which has often turned destructive or become vandal prone.

If it is me I will sue Face Book and get some money of Zuckerberg. Why not? it's American way. Never take responsibility for your action and blame everybody else but you. There is a lady suing Dunkin donuts for putting sugar in her coffee.
