This accelerator in Europe could have been built here in the United States. In fact the Superconducting Supercollider (SSC) as it was called was to be built in Texas. It was killed as a project because of politics in the United States in the early 1990's. Now Europe holds the chair as the leader in high energy physics. Imagine what could have happen to the economy in the region of the country that would have built this massive experimental machine. The spinoff affect in businesses created and the other supporting industries. In fact, an example, IBM wanted to build a huge research lab in the region near the collider. Just like the poor insight our politicians have on many other such projects in science and technology, we lost another one.

Very good point, clear case of economic and political shortsightedness.
