Sweden was involved in the slave trade with Denmark. Like Denmark they left early and sold a island colony.

Although many European countries were heavily involved in the slave trade, their roles in it differed depending on their status at the time. Some, such as England, France and Portugal used slave labour in their colonies while others, such as the Netherlands, Norway/Denmark, Sweden, were mainly active in the commercial trade and shipping, thus contributing to the trade by carrying slaves from Africa to the Caribbean and Latin America.

Sweden had treaties with England and France concerning slave trade, with Swedish ships involved in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Between 1784 and 1878, we held minor colonies in the Caribbean. The Swedish island Saint-Barthélemy functioned as a duty free port and became a major center for the Caribbean slave trade. Slaves were brought in tax free by both Swedish and foreign vessels and the Swedish authorities made a profit by collecting an export tax when slaves were shipped out. Sweden was also a major supplier of iron chains used in the slave trade!
Event though these countries werent owners of slaves for the most part they were for a while very integral parts of the machinery, which is just as bad, if not worse.

Its not the fault of Europeans of today. Its history. No person here agrees with slavery but we cant do anything about it.

 

I think it would be better if our history of slave trading was taught in schools. That way people would be better informed.

 

You describe at the end the same system as it works today. We (the western world in general) support several groups and governments to suppress their own folks in Africa. If you ever have seen, how Africans tremble out of fear, because the right guys show up- you recognize that not much has changed. Rebel leaders and the red barrets i. e. are many times people, who have no scruple to kill people or to rape on the street in front of hundreds of witnesses. It is pure power there. Why it is like that I cannot answer.

 

Yeah it´s not that easy, Sarah. Fair has to be fair- we pay for Israel, so, why should the offsprings of the Slaves not get reparations? Jews are strong in economy- one reason, why they could put their demandings through very quick. But injustice is injustice- the discussion should just lead to the result that all involved countries have to pay, percental to the profit they made. If you have people, who work for you costless, you make a lot of profit- that has to be shared, plus the violence (what is at the end a symbolic payment- the people are dead)

You are right- nobody nowadays transports human beings with chains on a boat- but the modern slavery is still going on- or do you think europeans or americans are supporting natural ressources? Do you expect to see any person of the first world to work on the field? Europeans and Americans go to Africa, sit on a table to negotiate with the persons in charge there- split the money and the Africans take care that the product is delivered to the port of destination. The profit has to be high so kids and grown ups will be taken to work cheapest, without any human rights and under horrible circumstances. Beating, raping,killing is normal. Excuse me, that is , how I would define slavery..And the world closes the eyes.. the luxury is there- the products are cheap..

Around 12 Mio people all over the world live today under slavery conditions, half of them are children..If you seek for neutrality of the past, open your eyes for the presence and see the tears now!

 

I want my reparations. I want my share of reparations now. France owes me money, America owes me money, Holland owes me money, Brazil owes me money; pay up for all my close ancestors life and land. Pay up in dollars not in Euro. In fact, you can just pay me up with white women.
