    And to add to that,

Before the powers at be want to go out and act as the morality police for the rest of the world, clean up your own shit first.

Not at all! I think the last post she left was a little rough!

I was just clarifying that if you are not white in America it is a whole other ball game, not a fairy tale.

I am not American but I have no intention of treating others in an inferior way or having sex with non white women  I am strictly dickly

I am going to work on human rights legislation. Ain't no fairy tales.

It angers me when people go after Muslim countries when they have a whole lot of shit festering right in their own back yard

    ". . . you're"

And the only way to find out is to go live in an Islamic republic and compare it to living in the United States.

    Best of luck.

    I am Muslim.

    My husband is Muslim.

Me being in aviation and him being in the medical field we have many mutual friends who have been there and all said the same about the LEGALIZED SEGREGATION AND DISCRIMINATION. Even my husband friend who grew up with him in Lousiana during Jim Crow times said it was worst then we would believe.

But we can pretend that you know more than anyone cause you going over there to get your bit of that tainted money.

And you better get use to getting mad, cause I will continue to speak of their discrimination, segregation and human rights abuses. There is a difference when any government sanctions and legalizes these things like the use to here and in places like south africa. Them being non-white doesnt make it any more palatable.

Besides, being a Muslimah it is my duty to speak on these issues. When a nation presents itself as Muslim it is important to remind people that what they are doing is not Quranic.

Jelly, how can it be "just as bad"? While there is still discrimination and racism here, it isnt LEGALIZED and STATE SUPPORTED. When is the last time you went to look for a place to live and was told they only rent to white (or black or asian or mexican) people. And even if that were to happen, you have LEGAL RECOURSE. There they have nothing because it isnt against the law.

I think your missing the just of her point.

Which is..."Is there really a difference if one system practices legalized discrimination and segregation and another practices subtle and covert segregation and discrimination (which is what the us has been doing for the last 50+ years)?

If your point is that the us is the lesser of the two evils, then your still saying the us - this so-called beacon of democracy and equal opprotunity - still engages in segregation and discrimination.

No, I just dont agree with her.

The only way "not" to agree with her is to say that "the us doe not segregate or discriminate based on sex, race, or religion."

And Im pretty sure you would agree that's a false statement.

Nope, I can disagree on the point that is is "as bad". And I have made this more than clear. I am not minimalizing what goes on here. I just have traveled and lived in other countries so I know how good we have it here even if it isnt perfect.

Try having grown up as a Kurd in Iraq, or going thru a Laotian communist "education camp" because you arent a communist, or any other number of places and countries. I call these out because I know people who have gone thru these sufferings. What they endured cannot even be fathomed by those who grew up here. Which is where my belief of Americans with their faerie tale mentality come from.

You mean how good "you" have it here?!

You are minimizing what goes on here, because...and I dont mean to offend you, but as a white woman, you cant understand what its like to be black here in the US.

And I can "fathom" what people over there go thru because I could write from here until doomsday about the atrocities that blacks continue to suffer thru here in the US. (Does "Sean Bell" ring a bell?...no pun intended.)

Do you know how tired I am of watching the POLICE KILL unarmed black men - and get off scott-free - and how our government does nothing?

    Fly Girl,

I totally respect your opinion on the situation in the UAE and the fact that you disagree with me.

Where I do have an issue is where you said that we can pretend I know more than anyone because I am going over there to get my bit of that tainted money. I found that comment very hurtful and quite frankly false.

I have never, nor will I ever think I know more than anyone on these issues. I don't think anyone has a monopoly on understanding.

What I do know is that I have dedicated the last 17 years of my life to working in conflict resolution and human rights. I have worked in some of the most hideous conditions in the world. Refugee camps on the Thai Burmese border, Uganda and Rwanda. I go into these situations to try to understand what the issues are and how to open dialogue between all parties involved. I do not provide answers. I have none. I try to find the correct questions to ask to hopefully foster some understanding. I MOST CERTAINLY do not go over there to exploit or make it my playground.

My post about the US was to to clearly illustrate the fact that while there are appalling conditions all over the world, there are still some MAJOR issues to be addressed in the USA. Often times these are ignored because those with power do not like the reflection they see in the proverbial mirror and do not want to give up their piece of the pie. Giving it up means that they are of the belief that it was theirs to begin with. The swath cut by racism is wide and jagged. It is covered up with afluence, commercialism, military might and a system of imposed compliance.
It is true that there is no longer legislated segregation but I am sure that many black men or women living in the states could tell you they didn't get a job or an apartment because of their race. It may not have been said directly, but there was that uncomfortable silence when the door opened or that shuffling of papers during the interview. What makes it damaging is the fact that it is NOT overt and therefore it makes it easier for those who are not directly victimized by it to then ignore the idea that it exists. Oppression is oppression what ever form, colour or persuation it manifests itself in.

I am going there to learn. I have know idea what I am going to find. I may walk away disturbed by what I learn or I may walk away hopeful. I don't know. What I do know is that I am going to continue doing what I do. I may be idealistic but I think people need to get involved and try to make a difference. You may disagree with me on that and I respect that decision.

Yes, I am just as tired as you are of these things. But what you are not understanding is that people in other countries, have watched their entire families or communities pull off and killed. It isnt the same.

Try going over to Haiti and telling them how bad you have it here. They would laugh at you.

When I posted that, you took it and ran. It wasnt directed at you. It was directed at the men who think it is OK to use other places as their playgrounds.

Check the quote. You will see what it came after and it wasnt something you said.

And YES, MANY people here have a problem with disrespecting other cultures and thinking they can just use that country as their playground. I work for an airline and we all fly for free. I see and hear their stories. And NO, it isnt just the white men.

Im not saying that those in Haiti dont have it worse than I do, but what I am saying is that for people in the US to judge how people are treated in another country and criticize their value system when we cant even stop our own police from indiscriminately killing our own citizens based on race and skin color is laughable.

As vanilla said, how about we take care of the sh*t thats festering in our own back yard, first before we criticize those half way around the world!
