this is probably the only place I can seriously talk about this. I have locks down to my back and now its time to cut them. I have black and white friends and a white girl friend who is also a hair stylist. She keeps mentioning that she could cut my hair or a co-worker(also white) could. so now, here is where I think I get hung up. The idea of trusting her or someone else that does not have experience with nappy/kinky hair is off putting. I guess, I'm asking, this, is it so wrong that I am not into the idea? And, what would you do? She is really good with the snips, but part of me thinks/knows that she doesn't know the first thing about making it all work. She touches me and my hair when we are intimate and we groom each other, but its the hair thing that makes me draw a line. Now, I already know what I am going to do but the experience has me thinking more about the small details in life that point out our racial biases. Church would be another example, but I dont go to church so it doest apply.
I love my dear white people and all (okay, you know what i mean :lol, but never, and i repeat, never let a white person come 10 feet of your hair. Shit, i don't even let black people touch my hair so hell!!!
lol.. I cut my own hair for the simple fact that, where I live now, does not have brotha barbers. back when i was in the hood, I used to hit up the brothas and keep my hair tight. Or, i would hit up my uncle and he'd tighten it up.. I will admit that I am biased too..i generally will not go to a white barbershop to get my fade. If I knew the person, it would be different. They have asian barbers where I live at also, but I don't go near their joint. it's just somethin about havin a brotha cut your hair, you know..some sort of bond there... I did have a white girl back in college, braid my hair. It was the first time she came into contact with a black person on such a level. I'm all about spreading the racial harmony, so I put my head in her lap and she started braiding away. 30 minutes later, I begged her to take them out
FWIW - My bf is happy for (and asks) me to braid his hair and I have actively learnt how to do different styels...but cutting - no way. Even if he asked, I wouldn't do it, because I don't know the physics (for want of a better word) of how kinky/afro hair works and I would probably cut it wrong. A wrong hair cut is just bad bad bad... And, afro hair takes such effor to grow to decent length, if I cut it wrong, there's 6 months of hair growing gone. Now - having said that - I don't think there's any reason why a ww couldn't know/learn how to do afro hair...but you have indicated that she's a regular hair dresser and does not do afro hair.... so, my advice would be - hurt her feelings and get a professional to do it. At least if something screws up with it, you might be able to sue them! hehe.
