Discount retailer Dollar General Corp. plans to open 625 new stores and hire more than 6,000 new employees this year. Most store openings will be distributed among the 35 states where the company currently has locations. Kansas has 169 Dollar General locations; Missouri has 341. The company’s website lists at least 25 stores in the Kansas City metro area, including eight stores in Kansas City, Mo.; five stores each in Kansas City, Kan., and Independence; two each in Olathe and Blue Springs; and one each in Mission, Shawnee and Liberty. Three new states - Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire - will receive stores. Each store averages six to 10 employees, a mix of full- and part-time workers. Employees receive wages that are competitive in the market and can get flexible hours. The company also plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores.
