Did the dad discipline his son the right way by boxing the teen?

Exactly. My parents need to spank me went out the window once I got into middle school. Beyond that point, anything physical discipline you use against your child is not only to build resentment, it's also going to cause you some legal problems if you're a parent. A 5 or 6 year old may be too scared to tell someone that he's been hit; a 15 or 16 year old, not so much.

Also, what's with the need to put shit like this on social media? If you want to discipline your kids then do that but there's absolutely no need to throw vids of it all over Facebook and Youtube because once it's on the internet it's out there forever. It's especially stupid when you literally videotape yourself committing a crime.

Exactly. What's the point on doing that?

Was he trying to make himself an internet hero or something?

It gets to be counterproductive. The entire point of discipline is that your kids learn the difference between what's acceptable and what's unacceptable at an early age so that when they get older and the consequences of misbehaving are a lot higher, they know that if they step out of line they run the risk of being punished.

Putting it on the internet where his friends and classmates can see it (and they WILL see it, no matter how he tries to keep that from happening) is probably going to make his son act out even more than he would have previously. Maybe I'm just old school but when I was a kid what happened at home stayed at home.

    That's what's up.

When the government cleans up their own house and start prosecuting dirty cops, maybe then they can give some advice.

If I get charged for spanking my own child, I'll take that charge and when they act up I'll spank them again.

What dad did was way out if bounds.

I have not spanked my daughter cause i haven't needed to do so but I have punished her. If I had a boy I would roll the same....however like I said to stizzy I'm not against spanking either.... Its not my choice. I do believe it needs to be in school with parents permission.

In this case it was unnecessary. Like I said before, if the kid broke the law, refused other types of punishment, disrespected his mom or something like that then....it's either you put the kid out on the street or beat his ass. Some people choose to kick their kids out or allow them to be disrespectful. If the situation was at that point then the dads actions would have had more merit.

Either way it's none of the governments business.

When I was a correctional officer, inmates would tell me that if they had a father who would beat their ass for doing wrong they wouldn't be in prison. What they all told me was that they were from broken homes and the mother raised them. However, in their case, their mothers were overwhelmed with the responsibility of raising children on her own. So these young men strike out on their own, aware and unaware of risks and consequences. This is the whipping they get.

A town in Georgia had a plan to institute an old punishment, public whippings. A lot of folks thought it would scare the kids doing wrong into thinking about the punishment. Others thought it was cruel and unusual punishment. One guy simply said ,"I got my pride. Just take me to jail."
The ones tasked with carrying out the punishment were from the Sheriff's department and they were white men.

The father is now having criminal charges brought against him, which he should have. That is not the way for a father to punish his teenage child.

You ground him for a week and make him clean the house from top to bottom, every day. Then you try to find out what the real problem is, the child could have a learning disability or something.

YOU are the teenager's FATHER, YOU are supposed to reach deeper to find out what the real problem is.

Really? Do you remember what part of this state this was? I need to know so I don't accidentally speed through there or something. Outside of Atlanta this place is part Gone With The Wind and part Deliverance.

It wasn't near Atlanta. I think near Albany. The incident occurred in the 90's and it's doubtful that they will ever institute public whipping again. I have never been to Atlanta. I had heard good things and bad things about it. Mostly bad. I have a cousin who lives there. Elton John has a home there. I don't think Georgia is the best place for me to live in.

We should let the police do it instead. That way no one gets prosecuted and the boy gets maimed or killed. Sounds legit.

There was a commercial featuring a police officer talking to the camera about a parent's responsibility and juvenile crime. At the end, he said as he stood by a jail cell, "Take care of your kids or we will do it for you."
