I'd like to build a green home. And yes, it will cost a fortune to build. But it pays for itself down the road. People are even using metallic shipping containers to build a home since they are in great abundance. Solar, wind and geothermal energy are also good investments since there is no shortage of those things, either. But, it all comes down to smart planning. There is no limit to designing a home. It's all out there.
Building "green" is nothing more that a marketing buzz word. It takes more energy and resources to create those solar panels you see in the picture, lol. If you truly want to go "green". Buy a house that was built before the 1950's, for some reason, city planners really put allot of thought on neighborhood layouts. Today, city planners are more concern with generating tax revenue then worrying about how many houses can a developer can put on one acre. Having an older home, you're getting craftsmanship, today's builder are slapping these small window cookie cutter homes and asking a mint for them.
Sorry to hear. What makes it a money pit? I know it's not the construction of the house. Is the wiring and plumbing outdated?
