    Chloe Marshall

She hails from Guildford, England and competed to win Miss Surrey, a beauty competition in the United Kingdom. Now she wants to go on and win Miss England. But should this seventeen-year-old be allowed? This is the question raised recently by a British reporter (who has been labelled a headline grabber) who insisted that Marshall was "fat, lazy and a poster girl for ill health".

Why is this 5' 10" beauty fat you ask? Because by insurance company's BMI standards the 176 pound curvy chic falls into the overweight range. This of course would tell anyone who looks up to the winner of Miss England, that obesity is acceptable. One of the main assumptions about overweight women is that they must be lazy. Chloe is far from lazy. The future beautician likes to exercise and her routine includes a healthy dose of running and horse back riding.

Chloe Marshall has also been bashed because of her fat positive crescendo of wanting to show young women that it is ok to be plus size and that it is possible to be plus size and beautiful.

If any one could be the banner girl for the UK on size acceptance for young women then Chloe may be their shining star. She has received a mixture of positive and negative press but lets face it any kind of press is helpful these days.

Chloe Marshall was the only plus size candidate in the Miss Surrey competition and the first size 16 Miss England entrant. Hopefully next year there will be more than the token plus size contestant.

The Miss England title is just one of many titles owned by the Miss World organization. This competition's focus is young women 17 - 24 years of age and living in England. Chloe beat out seven other talented contestants for Miss Surrey in March and goes on to compete for Miss England in July. I'll keep my fingers crossed until then. Who knows, maybe after that we'll be cheering her on for the Miss World title!

    thanks for this article!

you are right!! it is very refreshing to see a beauty queen who eats!! she's beautiful. people get so scared of the term "plus-size" - they assume fat. i guess that's partially due to fat women categorizing themselves with the "plus-size" girls. there is a huge difference between being "p-s" and fat. i modeled for 5+ years, as a "plus-size" model. it was awesome....and something that most people don't know - plus size models are considered "speciality models", and get paid more than the twigs. gotta love that!! :D even marilyn monroe was a size 16, and she was a total sex-kitten.

thank God for LANE BRYANT. don't think anyone would argue that these women are gorgeous! www.plusmodels.com

this is my favorite "plus-size" model. her name is kate dillon - she used to be a "regular" model, but got sick of it. the link has a couple of galleries of hers, but you can see the pic below. she's totally hott (in a non-lesbian way, lol)! i think she's gorgeous!!

The sad part about where society's perception is today is that these girls are BARELY even plus size. They're not toothpicks, but they are hardly plus size. I suppose that if their measurements are anything higher than single digits, then that's what we should be thankful for. People are calling Tyra Banks plus size. People call Kate Winslet plus size. Where are these people's eyes and what is wrong with their brains and their distorted and close-minded view of female beauty? If anything, Chloe Marshall is normal size. We should have been seeing girls like her win pageants since their inception.

Sorry for the rant, folks. This is not an attack against any of you.

    i totally agree with you!

i do think that women like chloe marshall, kate dillon, kate winslet, etc. should be considered "normal-sized" models, b/c they look like 80% of real women walkin' around. sadly though, in the modeling world if you are above a size 10 you fit the "plus-size" mold. i even read today, that they use some size 8 models....that makes no sense at all, b/c if you go in to any lane bryant or catherines or torrid, you'll be lucky to find a size 12. most "plus-size" clothing stores start at a 14/16. so to use the skinny side of the "plusses", is a pretty poor representation of the average american woman.

but....at least they are trying to make an effort.

She has not won Miss New England so she has not broken anything. What she's doing is competing and that's commendable. Unfortunately she probably won't win, and fortunately she probably shouldn't. Here's where it's going to get interesting so let's dig right in shall we...

Unfortunately she's not going to win because fortunately thin still rules not just in England, but most of the world. That includes this site, check the mens locker room and tell me how many plus size women are being oogled there! Let's switch genders, check the ladies room how many plus size men are being oogled? The truth of the matter is the preference of women desired is still thin. That does not mean plus size women are not attractive, they are just not the most desired.

Fortunately she probably shouldn't win because her win would mask a huge problem mostly here in the US and that's a large, very large number of women are lazy and out of shape. Her win would instigate and reinforce that big is beautiful and it is to some, but not healthy any...

i've been in the men's locker room and looked at the chicks being oogled and what not. but how many of those women end up with your average jo shmo? not to say that average dudes aren't worthy, but seriously? there's such a double-standard when it comes to weight and size in our society. men can be 10, 20, 30lbs over weight and it's acceptable. but God forbid a woman gains 15lbs...she's considered a fat ass. it really pisses me off.

and....i could almost bet money that most of the women walking around that are considered "hott", are probably over a size 10. the only reason i say that, is b/c most men (not all) probably don't realize the number on the tag of a woman's jeans. a size 10-16 can look "thin" and "normal" on a girl who's 5'7" or taller.

**malik, i'm not attacking you...i'm just putting out some food for thought. i hate the term "plus-size"....it has so many freakin' stereotypes that come with it. they should just get rid of it all together.

What makes you think that a larger body is not healthy? What makes you think that a thin body is? Believe it or not, there are millions of full-figured women who are in great health. Laziness, in more cases than people admit, has nothing to do with weight. I'm the size of a toothpick and when I want to be, I'm lazier than anyone. For one, purely from a physiological/anatomical standpoint, fat distribution within the body helps "pad" vital organs, bones, and muscle tissue. Sufficient fat distribution helps insulate the body, it is used in numerous necessary bodily processes, and it looks beautiful on the outside when stored proportionately throughout the body. Please don't interpret this as an attack on you. I'm just saying that we need to get away from this perception that fat = lazy and thin = attractive. However, I'm not hating on the thin women. IT'S CLICHE TIME: Beauty comes in numerous forms. Speaking on an aesthetic level, I think that some thin women are hideous. Some of them are gorgeous. Same applies to large and larger women. Personally, it's about proportion and fat distribution with me. Hourglass style and variations of, coupled with some size are where that perfect form can be found. Many thin women can and do have exquisite curves. Plus size women--the real ones, not those like Chloe Marshall--simply have more pronounced curves. I don't care what size a woman is, curves are supremely feminine. Chloe Marshall is a thin girl with curves.

We also have to take into consideration the different body types (i.e. endomorphic, ectomorphic, and mesomorphic) among people. Some people were born to be thick, some were born to be thin, some were predispositioned for a unique blend of the two. Society goes through cycles from millennium to millennium. There was a time, I'm sure you all are aware of, that the global standard of beauty was the plus size woman. I'm personally hoping we can return to that, but if not, then at least a healthy balance of today's and yesterday's "standard".

I'm definitely a combo of endomorphic and mesomorphic.

Healthy and thin do not go hand in hand....that is one of the greatest fallacies in our culture...kids are taught from an early age that thin means healthy...which just isn't true. I know this because even though I'm very average sized now...I was a hefty child....(110 lbs in the 1st grade)....yet I was in better physical condition then the majority of the kids in my class.... I played sports and jumped rope 6 days a week....usually 2-3 hrs per day including recess....but I was still "chunky"....I grew out of that..but again....

    THIN = HEALTHY (incorrect)

    THICK = UNHEALTHY (incorrect)

I do agree however that our culture embraces sedentary living and over-eating more than it should....I also agree that there is a strong correlation between body size and fitness....but that ultimately....it's not the "end all, be all."

We must also keep in mind that the idea of thin women being the acceptable standard is a fairly new one. Not until the second half of the 20th century did thin women become the accepted ideal. In today's world...it still isn't fully accepted.

Africa, some parts of South Asia, Latin America, Polynesian Islands and in some areas of the Middle East....thicker (certainly not obese) women are still standard....only in most of Europe and North America are "thin" women held as ideal. East Asia is an exception but that has more to do with the fact there simply aren't a lot of large people there (due mostly to diet/genetics).

All one has to do is look at Renaissance portraits to see that even in Europe....curvy was preferred.

We must get over this idea that a bigger woman simply can't be beautiful....that just isn't true....certainly poor eating/exercise habits shouldn't be celebrated but we must stop making the assumption that a girl that isn't a size 0,2 or 4 is lazy.......everyone can't have the same shape.

Am I lazy because I don't have a body like this:

    http://www.porcellino.net/uomini/tyson_beckford22.jpg

I workout regularly and have a decent physique....I don't look like that....but I'm not lazy and unhealthy

We all know who is and isn’t over weight, obese, plus size, gluttonous what ever label is applicable. If you don’t think you or Americans in general are over eating you are only fooling yourself and it’s going to hurt you down the line.

You can list reason by reason, or attempt to apply scientific fact to your situation and attempt to convince yourself otherwise. My eyes day in and out see Americans slogging around of every ethnicity and gender carrying excess weight, put simply these folks are fat bordering obesity. These folks are eating ice cream, walking into Wendy’s and hawking down all kinds of food. If they are happy that’s fine, they have to deal with the repercussions…

she'd look pretty attractive if she lost some weight. It looks as if shes atlittle past being "thick"...perhaps 10-15 pounds would do it

Co-sign Malik, as someone who travels a great deal for work, I have noticed a great increase in overweight and obese people. As far as regular joes getting the hotties, all it takes is for that regular joe to become successful in his profession (money) and watch how those hotties flock. Bottom line is, fair or unfair, if a woman is big, fat, thick, chunky, however you want to put it, she is most likely limiting herself to the less desireable end of the dating pool, yes there are exceptions, some successful men do prefer the big girs, Pierce Brosnan comes to mind, but in my experience, most people, male or female are more attracted to the physically fit. The fact that obesity has become an epidimic with far reaching health and economic consequences cannot be disputed. Lastly the fact that ruebenesque women were revered as beautiful in the past is very specious, in that being fat was seen as a sign of wealth and having access to food, not that they were more beautiful, look at who the monarchs of that time married, they were not the big girls.

The person who said that woman is the poster person for ill health says nonething on the models who represent famine on the cat walks today. Women like Winslet,Monroe,Mansfield, and many others are the standard of beauty in my book.
