Charleston's First African American Fire Chief Sworn In

It was a historical night for the city of Charleston, as the city's first African American fire chief was sworn in.



Chuck Overstreet was officially named chief during Monday night's Charleston City Council meeting.

During the ceremony he was pinned by former firefighter Calvin Hicks.

Overstreet said his stepfather and an uncle persuaded him to become a firefighter. He also said being a firefighter has been the best job he's ever had.

Overstreet scored the highest on a written exam two weeks ago.

Born and raised in Charleston, the 52-year-old Overstreet earned Associate and Bachelor's degrees from West Virginia State University.
