Greed, lust and power all function under deception. It is all up to the individual's wants and desires. As Master Yoda says, "Excitement. Adventure. A Jedi wants not these things." But we live in a society that wants it all and wants it now. I'll throw in an old Hebrew saying, "A man may play, but it is God who laughs." It simply means that no matter what you might plan for yourself in your life, God always intervenes and shows you His plan in His own time. God may allow some to achieve, but somewhere down the road, the searcher encounters the unforeseeable. And as the Wiccans say, "What you bring forth, returns four-fold." Perhaps, it is more than that,
Can we be honest about what we mean by racism. It's not simply just saying something hateful or mean because there are so many things we can say that are hurtful that aren't restricted to race. When I think of racism I am more inclined to think about what people actually do and not only what they do but how our authorities react to it. Does anyone white on this forum fear that a non white person will actually physically hurt them? When they go to a job interview are you really concerned amongst all the reasons why you may not get a job will race be one of the things that hold you back? When you see the police do breathe a sigh of relief or tense up in anticipation that something might happen? There is a real and tangible difference between prejudice which can be hurtful and full on racism which can deadly and life altering. I ask people to have the sensitivity and self awareness to recognize and acknowledge there is a difference. Just like as a man I have to be aware that I am not exposed in the same way my female counterparts are. Yes a woman can sexually harass me and degrade me but my physically safety is never threatened in the same way. So just keep that in mind when you guys (black men included) say that anyone can be racist because the honest truth is that's really not true in this country. Never has been and most likely never will be.
It's the classic prejudice versus racism discussion. There are plenty of racially prejudiced people among every ethnic group. But the only pseudo-scientific reasoning coupled with a political, economic and social order developed around the particular prejudices of some of its members is white racism. There is a milder form of it present in Aryan-centric India among the BJP, Israel has a form of it, that couples white European racism with Jewish ethnocentrism, Arab upper classes in North African countries practice it against Berbers and Tuaregs, East Asian societies have a degree of it, but white racism is the most fully developed of these on the planet.
Okay, here we go again...misinterpretations seem to run rampant at this site. Or else people willfully misinterpret for the sheer joy of arguing...read carefully. Nowhere in my post (re-posted with emphasis for your convenience) do I state that all white people are racist. NOWHERE. It is a specific response to the discussion about the difference between prejudice and racism. I state VERY CLEARLY (IF YOU BOTHERED TO READ) that EVERY ethnic group has prejudiced individuals. The difference is that in a place where a single ethnic group is dominant, individual prejudice can become implemented as part of a larger economic or government policy. THAT'S WHAT RACISM IS. Nowhere in my statements do I indict the entire white race. Or any other race, for that matter. The very existence of this forum represents an acknowledgment of the difficulties that IR couples face and a recognition of the problems created by structural racism in this society as well as prejudice in the minority community.
No. That is not what racism is .there is a difference between racism and institutionalized racism the latter is what white folks have on lock. Not racism. Racism is thinking other ethnicities are worth less than others and threat them worse. That you can do on a personal level. It becomes institutionalized when, it gets implemented in the larger economic and governmental policies.. The lack of distinction between the two seems to be very american to me. If you believe your race is better than another, and treat that ethnicity worse, but have no economic, or governmental ability to implement your racism, your still a racist. You just can't excersize institutionalized racism. That is my opinion
It definitely doesn't align with studies on race and culture. You also are in a position of power because of your skin so you can't see it the same way. I can hate (insert group here) all I want but it doesn't matter since I can't obstruct their ability to live or profit. You on the other hand can very well stop dealing with (insert ethnic group here) if you really wanted to in your social life (maybe not your professional life). As I get other I'm being to see that certain things you have to live to really "get it". It's not a slight against you but if you had any idea what its like to be non white in this world especially this country you'd see things completely differently. True racism doesn't stop at a superiority complex, I could feel that way based on so many other things but its what can be done to you that opens the fuck out of your eyes.
Which is exactly why I don't believe in black racism, blacks don't have the ability to affect your life style. Our actions and beliefs cannot prevent you from employment, they dont affect your freedom to live where you want, or your income.
I agree with you on content, I have just used different terminology my entire life. What you call racism, I have always called 'prejudice' or 'racial bigotry' and what you defined as 'institutional racism' is what I have always referred to as 'racism'. But the point you made is exactly the distinction I was trying to make between individual beliefs and beliefs that become institutionalized, systematized, and made part of general public policy. Sorry for the imprecise terminology.
Neither TDK nor coffee is really replying to my post.Orejon, we talk sort of the same language, but not.... I go by definition of racism. But I get you. However, racism is racism. Institutional racism is a whole other, ugly, disgusting issue.
i believe sometimes when we (blacks, whites, and other groups...but specifically blacks and whites) we (the media) scream lets have an honest convo on race we get overly emotional, confuse prejudice with racism and we dont want to face any truth and/or facts. i still say who started this thread was trolling.
