A British HIV-infected woman’s startling ignorance about her illness has stunned viewers of a talk-show clip that has since gone viral.

Rachel Dilley, 48, says she contracted HIV at age 40 from a sexual fling and admitted during an appearance on the UK’s ITV This Morning talk show that she “didn’t know anything about HIV” and “thought you got it in Africa.”

”I didn’t know a white person had ever got it,” said Dilley.

“I knew nothing about HIV or AIDs and everything I read on the Internet terrified me. When I told my children, they were devastated. My daughter was so affected she couldn’t speak and my younger son said: ‘Are you going to die?’ I couldn’t have felt more ashamed because I had no one to blame but myself.”

Do you think a lot of people share her bigoted views about the disease?

The first time I learned about HIV was in 1993 when I was in third grade.
It was topic two more times throughout my middle and highschool education.
Also very often there are huge posters outside near bus /train stops or other places people frequent,by foundations to bring awareness on HIV.
I can't judge how it is handles in other countries, but I'd be surprised if many Germans were clueless on it.
Usually people have knowledge on it,but nevertheless choose to have unprotected sex, just hoping nothing would happen.

quote : i know that sound stupid...

damn yes. i have to agree with BYT ... i was in class 7 or 8 which was around 1987/88 when we had to participate in lections about HIV/AIDS in school.

there was much attention spend to it by the death of actor rock hudson.
there was no way getting around it those days.
it came back hard on the media s as singer freddy mercury of queen died.

this woman is of my age and in my eyes she s not just naive.. she s terrible low educated. and that in the year 2014 is terrible scary.

I just feel bad for her in general. That poor woman is dying of a very stigmatized disease. It's plain sad.

Whatever. Her dumb ass deserved to get HIV.

No adult should be that out of touch about a sexually transmitted disease.

Bet she thinks rubbing baby powder between your legs prevents pregnancy too.:smt025

If that really is the case, if she'd grown up with no exposure to the dangers of HIV, then the UK government needs to step up and do something about educating their citizens...

Somehow I can't imagine it's anything other than her own ignorant fault, though.

I'm two years older than her and Australia in the 80's was inundated with aids information. You couldn't not know about it

Back in the early 80's, I remember the massive public awareness about STDs and teenage pregnancy. Celebrities gave PSAs about this topic. All of them prescribed protection(contraception). Well, teenage pregnancy continued to rise. And then came the advent of AIDS. Everyone assumed that only the Gay community and intravenous drug users got the disease and pretty much left it at that. But when Rock Hudson, Dack Rambo, Liberace, Dan Hartman and other celebrities died from the disease, Everyone started talking about it and had conjectures as to causes and prevention. The concept of safe sex came at around 1985. Playwright Harvey Fierstein even wrote a play simply titled Safe Sex. Elton John founded his AIDS foundation when a young fan named Brian Rice contracted the disease at the dentist's office. I recall the first time I ever saw an AIDS patient when I volunteered at a hospital. I had nothing to say. All I could remember was the way this person looked. A fellow volunteer was handling a blood sample and it somehow got opened. She was immediately treated and examined. It was discovered that the blood sample she had in her jacket pocket was AIDS infected blood. When she was found out to be fine and out of danger, she never went on specimen runs anymore. All the volunteers were required to wear rubber gloves when handling specimens. In the case of this woman, she was ignorant of what she was doing at the time. And she didn't read enough about HIV/AIDS. This is a hell of a way to learn. I wouldn't wish this on ANYONE. I am glad that she has friends and support.

To be honest here in the UK people know about Aids, but there isn't a lot of pushing of public awareness around sexually transmitted infections, unless you are under 25.
I used to be given leaflets by my Dr on sexual health/family planning every time I visited nearly, but now I'm older those questions have all pretty much dried up...... as well as my candidacy to receive a leaflet.

It's there if you look for it, but last time I watched a STI advert/public information slot it was more focused to chlamydia and that has got to be 4 odd years ago.

We do have standard Aids test for all pregnant mothers, but unless you seek out a test or information it's not in your face here.

I can see a lot of women her age being in the same situation.

    You're 50? :?:

(I know you aren't 50. You just didn't see that her age was listed as 48, but she got it when she was 40.)

    What I said was mean.

Thinking White people don't get AIDS or that only Africans were infected with HIV is ignorant.

that is just as true as the fact that HIV is NOT just transfered by homosexuell men and people with having a lot of sex partners. that s been one of the fairytales going around, too, for a very long time.
