Suspected Serial Robber Arrested By Carrie Whitaker and Sharon Coolidge • cwhitaker@enquirer.com | scoolidge@enquirer.com • April 14, 2010 A white bank robbery suspect who police say wore an elaborate mask that made him appear to be a black man was described by a judge today as a "master of disguise'' who needs to stay locked up. "You are the type of villain we read about in novels and see in the movies,'' Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Melissa Powers told Conrad Zdzierak as he appeared for an arraignment. She ordered him held on $3 million bond. Police said Wednesday that the pock-faced black man with no facial hair caught on surveillance cameras robbing four banks and a CVS store in 3½ hours April 9 is actually a 30-year-old white man by the name of Conrad Zdzierak. “He wore what I’m calling a ‘Hollywood quality’ mask,” Springdale police Lt. Michael Mathis said. “These things cost $600-$700.” Friday, Zdzierak crisscrossed through Springfield Township, Woodlawn, Springdale and Forest Park, robbing banks and the CVS pharmacy between 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., police said. Various police departments rushed after him, but weren’t able to get a step ahead. Throughout the chase, as his description was broadcast over and over again over police radios, no one suspected it wasn’t his real face. Then, police got a tip Zdzierak was staying at Extended Stay America, 320 Glensprings Drive, Springdale, Mathis said. “The more we investigated the more promising it looked,” Mathis said. Authorities obtained a search warrant and officers from the various police departments and the Cincinnati division of the FBI entered his hotel room. Zdzierak’s dog attacked one of the officers and was fatally shot, Mathis said. The officer was not seriously injured, he said. Zdzierak was placed under arrest. In the room police said they found marked money, the mask, clothing worn during the heists and articles with red stains from the dye packs bank tellers stuffed in with the loot. Zdzierak is charged with six counts of aggravated robbery for the April 9 robberies of Key Bank, 8457 Winton Road; Fifth Third Bank, 10595 Springfield Pike; Key Bank, 11355 Princeton Pike; CVS Pharmacy, 11601 Springfield Pike; Franklin Savings, 1100 W. Kemper Road; and the March 5 robbery of Chaco Bank, 143 Smiley Road. “It’s a first,” Mathis said of the realistic mask. “This was a true team effort.” Zdzierak has been in Cincinnati since at least September, authorities said.
