Im watching some crazy stuff on tv. Anybody ever heard of "Body Integrity Identity Disorder", people who want to get rid of their legs e.g.? That is some scary shit! How can somebody see a person in a wheelchair and think "I want to be like that"? I heard of it before but I never saw a documentary like that. One was a healthy and attractive 37 year old woman who wants to have children, yet she has the dream to be paralyzed down from the waist. Those people even think about jumping in front of a train to get their wish.:smt085
That is pure insanity! It kind of reminds me of that old Robin Williams movie "The World According to Garp" where the little girl who'd had her tongue cut out prompted a lot of those crazy feminists in the movie cut their tongues out to "honor" her, which I thought was crazy as hell. BIID sounds like a scary twist on Munchausen Syndrome.
That woman had this dream ever since she was 4! It seems to be some really depressing disfunction of the brain.
I don't know much about it because it's not in the DSM IV-TR, but the latest version (DSM V) should be out in the 2012 and is likely to include some information about it. My professor went over it very briefly and I don't even think we talked about diagnostic criteria because nothing had been established at the time I took that course. It is sad, for sure.
BIID, aint nutin new here,,,,I have heard of it,,,what can I say? I am a man of well-rounded knowledge.
