COLUMBIA, S.C. - Three people upset that a news crew was reporting on the arrest of a relative attacked the television reporter and yelled racial slurs at her and a photographer, authorities said Tuesday.

The family members, all white, began yelling and charged at black WSPA-TV reporter Charmayne Brown while she was standing in the street near the family's home in Union, said news director Alex Bongiorno.

Brown was punched in the head, and black cameraman Ti Barnes was also struck as he tried to pull family members off Brown, Bongiorno said. A video of the attack shows Brown, who wasn't seriously injured, defending herself.

"I think she's more affected by the verbal abuse than the physical abuse. She's really shaken up," Bongiorno said.

The fight was taped by a white crew from a second television station. They were not attacked.

Tousha Smith, 31, Billie Joe Taylor, 31, and Trina Vinson, 48, were being held at a Union jail Tuesday evening on assault and battery charges, authorities said. South Carolina has no law allowing a hate crime charge.

Attempts to contact the family were unsuccessful; messages left at several numbers were not immediately returned, and authorities said they weren't sure whether the three had attorneys.

Charges are pending against a fourth person, authorities said. The reporter and photographer were not charged.

Brown was reporting on the death of 73-year-old Tommy Howell, who was killed by a blow to the head after an argument, authorities said. His body was found Tuesday in his home. Police arrested his grandson, Shane Howell, and charged him with murder, Union Police Chief Sam White said.

Shane Howell remains in jail, and it is unclear whether he has an attorney.

"These people were very upset," White said. "I guess they just took it out the wrong way."

Normal life in South Carolina, an African-American being attacked for no apparent reason. The family will now have to deal with being viewed as racists since that is caught on tape.

One of the 3 attackers apologized for that senseless attack. The article and video are on wspa.com. WSPA is where the reporter was based when the attack on her happened. Even with the apology, that attacker will have to deal with being labeled as a redneck and a racist for the rest of her life. Those can be shaken off, but it won't be easy since that video is on youtube.

I would like to know how are you going to post a report of a hate crime, and at the end of the post I see a quote from Teddy Roosevelt? Do you have any ides what he was about during the Spanish American War taking credit for the work that the ninth cavalry did (Buffalo Soldiers) saving his punk ass without horses, while he had them. Ruff Riders my ass, he ain't nothing but some punk taking credit for some shit he didn't do! And his cousin FDR did not allow black folks to work in the White House before noon, because he didn't want to see any black people before lunch. Fuck Theodore Roosevelt!
It's just like when I'm in this store on Crenshaw and Rodeo and I see a bunch of Ty Cobb jersey's hangin on a rack so I asked the manager why he was selling something like that in a black neighborhood? He said thats just what they send us? Not a chain, a black owned clothing store that is selling young men into the hip-hop lifestyle Ty Cobb throwback jersey's and they're buying and wearing them?!? Young brothas just don't be giving a fuck about knowledge no more, I was so happy when Ricky Henderson broke his records! Study history! Study your history! Know Thyself! Fuck Teddy Roosevelt! A black man was the first European to "discover" America Estevanacio it's real! The Indians knew, they had jokes- check it out! Shit they won't teach you in school, but you still need to learn it, know it!

Your right Officer J, but that would be to easy to spot and we all know about that cat, it's a lack of knowledge that lets the real facts fall through the cracks. Like ok queen Latifah and Dr. Dre were so vocal about having the great porn director Gregory Dark direct their videos (this was a few years back now) He also did porn scenes involving black women and white dudes in klan hoods? Why would Latifah and Dre be jocking this cat? Lack of knowledge. Socrates had it, cause he studied in Timbuktu a place we now think of as the middle of nowhere, Why is Hannibal more known for being a cannibal? Why is Magoo a cartoon character? Who were these men really?

One of the attackers, B.J. Taylor, apologized for what happened. I think the story on that site (wspa.com). The other 2 unless they step up and apologize now (or a lot sooner than later), they will likely be branded as rednecks and racists forever. The one who did apologize, hopefully she will learn from this. Shaking the racist label won't be easy, but it can be done.

Like the Black who work twice as hard to get ahead, the White who do such racist acts should do the same for his or her redemption.

Roosevelt did good things for African-Americans but also had failings like other presidents. He tried to desegregate New York schools and also invited Booker T. Washington to the the white house, appointed African-Americans as collector of tariffs and postmaster. I just agree with that particular quote. So take your own advice.

ok, I was ranting and went off on a tangent thats true, although I always agreed with the arguments W.E.B. DuBois had against Booker T. Washington's limited "Agricultural & Mechanical" approach to education for African-Americans. I also agree with the quote by Teddy that you posted, his statement is correct, It just bothers me to see props going to historical figures like that who although he had many failings when it came to inclusion, still did other things (maybe due to political pressure in some way, or for some reason) that benefited African-Americans. The lesser of two evils is still evil.

the man in the middle of that melee was arrested with that attack, so he is now having to deal with the redneck and racist label put on him, since the video is on youtube.com

Teddy Roosevelt does have a dark side when Blacks are concerned like for example he punished the Black soldiers in Brownsville,Texas and dissed the Ohio senator for trying to to have a investigation to have them innocent. When he ran again in 1912 his party would not allow Blacks to join. However, compared to Woodrow Wilson he is the lesser of two evils.

Maybe because one doesn't really have anything to do with the other. Obviously the poster likes having that quote as his signature. Big deal.

Shoot. Which famous white leader pre-1970 does not? Actually I can say the 80, 90s and 200os too. Not too many have a clean record. Not even Abraham Lincoln.

I used to love John Wayne..

until I found out about his comment towards black people, with relation to us being in more "ruling class" positions within amerikkka..

something about us not being ready to take on such responsibilities

I still watch his movies...i'm a war buff and like the old black and white joints..but in the back of my head i'm like "this mofocka"

One thing does have something to do with the other, just like the symbiosis that takes place in nature all things in life are inter-connected in some way, all of us are related to one another for instance. Every person on this planet is a cousin to every other person, have you ever heard of the term the Govt. uses to describe a form of symbiosis they find detrimental to their nonsense? Blowback, it's a word the CIA will use to describe a situation like inventing, training, and arming insurgent forces with Stinger RPG's to fight someone else only to have them use them on us 15 years later, blowback. The U.S. PUT Saddam in power, and in turn he waged war on Iran for eight years for us, then we killed him and his sons twenty years later. The cost is human life and trillions of dollars, blowback.
So getting back to my point about commenting about racism and hate crimes while ending the statement with an inspirational quote from a racist White cat, ok you don't see how one has anything to do with the other. History really does repeat itself all the time, just stay alive long enough and pay attention to what goes on around you and you'll see what I mean.
Am I some kind of militant brotha? No. I was just making some comments about the irony of Tedy's quote at the end of the statement on a hate crime, and how a lack of knowledge leads to something like that and so much more, with no offense intended to the author of the thread whatsoever, and I think your taking more offense then him by far. Thats why I'm trying to show you that yes One thing really does have something to do with the other. Just like cause and effect. What Eddie Murphy say in Life, "Theres gonna be consequences and repercussions."
