Ann Arbor Public Schools officials said Wednesday that the trip last week by 30 Dicken Elementary School students to meet Alec Gallimore, an African-American aerospace engineering professor and propulsion lab director at the university, was intended to inspire them as part of a bigger push to close a persistent gap in test scores between black and white students.

I have read this before. I am going to very candid. I don't care what some of these people say. You have to invite everyone and not just the black kids. It is being racial bias to do so. You can invite the kids with bad scores or the kids with low incomes but to separate them out by race will only hurt your objective. The other issue is bring kids who have a history of bad scores and grades to see one engineer for one day is a joke. You won't undo almost anything. It is like I have seen juvinele(sp) court shows. You can't think sticking them into even harvard for 8 hours and then releasing them back into a bad environment for 16 hours will be effective. It starts with the parents. If the parents are lousy, then you are screwed. I'm sorry to say that but it is what it is. No matter the skin color of the person. If the education system wants to help those kids out, it will need to become the parents over some of these parents who are lousy or can not be there for their kids for financial reasons or whatever the case may be.

    Great points archangel.

Also, I kinda feel bad for the black kids in this scenario. Basically making them feel inferior to their white classmates (like they are all not good enough).

    Just poorly handled all around.

Hmmm, smart kids victimized in favor of the dummies. I've never heard of that before. That this took place in Detroit is typical as the sunrise.

This shit is right up there with the idiots who wanted to teach ebonics in the California school system. Epic fail.

Very true. It all starts with the parents and their POSITIVE involvement in their kids' lives. Not the parents that expect the teachers to give their kids "A"s just because and who expect the teachers and the schools to babysit the kids. I'm talking about the parents that actually spend time with their kids at night helping them with their homework, looking over their homework, etc.

    It ALL starts at home.

I'm guessing Alec Gallimore was never taken on any Black only field trips..... nor were the Black people who had to learn in shacks, or those with an 8th grade education who seem to be smarter than your average modern high schooler.

These kids could meet Obama and stay in the White house for a week and would still get low grades. It's all bullshit, their asses are not studying, that's all there is to it.

The only way to do well is to study and hopefully live in a family that promotes cognitive ability. That's it! All these books/theories about how to teach or deal with Black children have really destroyed a generation; it assumes they are less intelligent or there are some major psychological and social factors involved that inhibits learning. So when you treat them like they are stupid, guess what, they are going to be stupid.

They need to make the curriculum harder and stop going soft on all American children, but something tells me they want us dumb and dumber...

excluding kids from a field trip, based on color, is a big no-no. that reeks of racism.
