Anyone heard people say this? Are we not strong swimmers? How true is this, or is it just another stereotype?

    I'm a terrible swimmer.

I was always terrified of deep waters growing up because I couldn't float well. I can swim from one side of the pool to the other, but I can't remain stationary and just float for long periods of time. I get tired and then sink.

I took swimming lessons at the age of 15 and I learned a little bit but I'm still not a great swimmer. I'm decent at best.

I just keep my black ass out of the deep water.

I cant go into deep water, I'll drown.

I never got swimming lessons, so I'm not much of a swimmer

I have heard of the sterotype. In florida, It is pushed pretty hard for everyone to swim. I dare say we have to learn how to swim from the day you come out of your mom's womb. lol

I'm not Black and I can't swim. I even had lessons, but shit didn't stick with me. I almost drowned when I was 17, so me and swimming aren't like me and bike riding.

I didn't realize that this was such a widely held belief among blacks and non-blacks in the US until I was in my twenties. As I've mentioned in the past, my family is from the Caribbean. My father religiously goes for morning runs on the beach and swims in the ocean. My parents started taking me to the beach and swimming pools as a baby, so I learned to swim at a very young age and never thought that there was an issue with black people and water.

I've actually heard several Americans claim with straight faces that people of sub-Saharan African descent can't swim because our bones are so dense that our bodies are much less buoyant than people of other races. I find this type of ignorance to be mind-boggling.

If you think that's bad, you should have heard the conversation/argument that I had with a few of my old college roommate's friends regarding whether or not blacks are a sub-species of human who have extra muscles and bones in our legs that help us to run faster and to jump higher. When I calmly attempted to hand one of them my laptop and asked him to search the internet for some comparative anatomy charts between the human races that diagrammed the differences in bone structure and organs to prove their point, he launched into an incoherent tirade about political correctness, affirmative action and how people like me were trying to abolish free speech. When he finished, there was a protracted awkward silence. After he realized that nobody had his back, he got up and left.

I mean, seriously - people never cease to surprise me in level of ingorance.
    I hope he never procreated.
We need such people to remove themselves from the gene pool. THEY are sub-species.

Well Sub Saharan Africans can't swim is an exaggration and but it is true that on average that American blacks have denser bones and are born with more lean muscle mass which would make them less bouyant. The main reason why black people are not good swimmers is access. There are not many pools or other large bodies of water near most African Americans so they will probably never pick it up.
