Throughout the history of America, there have been so many terms used to describe people of African ancestry and it seems to change with every generation. We have gone from "boy" all the way to "African-American" but most of these terms were not created by black people. The purpose of this poll is to find out which name most of the men on wwbm.com prefer to be called. Please answer the poll and your opinions on this topic are welcome here.

I will give my opinion later, so that my answer won't influence the early results of the poll. Thank you.

Good thread. And where DO you get these pictures from?! Obviously I can't vote, but I will think that the results will depends on who votes. IE most Africans will prefer to be African or specifically Nigerian etc as above. Most British probably black and some older people Negro etc. And I said MOST not ALL and I may be wrong.

Well not the 1st one for me lol.
The term african-german doesnt exist the way african-american does. To me I am German, my documents say that also. But of course to many I can never be German, so I chose black (black german). I think that is the same for most countries, maybe not USA.

Black. Let's just keep it simple.

African American is ok. But, sadly I've lost my African Heritage whatever that was: Nigerian, Liberian, Ghanian. Who the fuck knows? So, I just see it as a polite of saying Black.

Coloured – Haha, what era are you from? LMAO

Negro – Slightly offensive. Polite form of nigger as in “Negro, please. Who you trying to fool or in “There are some Negroes over there. LOL.

Nigger – Offensive, especially from the MAN. LOL

Nigga,Nikka,Nya – Term of endearment. I was just talking with my cousins about how useful this word is when talking to other non-uppity black folk.

I’d rather not be defined based on some pre-conceived notions about my race. I am proud of some things in my heritage though that are a part of me, but not all of me.

    Nigerian- i'd love that

    African- Equally pleasing

African American- Not my best choice but i'd go with it

    Black American- I dont accept

    Colored- That'd piss me off

Negro- You wanna get on my bad side

Nigger- You seriously want to lose your limbs

I'm not a lover of any of the options that we have to choose from, but if i had to choose i'd choose to be called a man of color. Mainly because it doesn't make any sense to call me black seing as though my skin is obviously brown in color you know.

These are not directed at anyone in particular. They are the responses based on my natural reaction:

African-American: Sure, depending on the connotation. That's my
nationality, NOT my 'race' or color, and would prefer NOT be solely identified by that.

Nubian: I can go with this, seeing is how I am a direct descendant of the Ancient Nubians, so whatever. It's still another word for black.

Black: Ah, the basic, and still the best.

Mulatto: What did you just say? Am I some sort of cookie, or breed of dog?

Colored/Man of color: Don't think so, unless you are from the Civil War era, or something. No one 'colored' my damn skin when I was born, so I shall ask you to refrain from that term around me.

Negro: What a delicate way to call me the 'other' word! You might make a new enemy if you do. Don't push me.

Nigga: For the last time, if you don't want white folks to call you this, then don't say it yourself, especially when you try to pass it off as a 'term of endearment.' What's so endearing about this word, let alone a word used to make you feel and be perceived as NOTHING TO ENDEAR, simply because of your pigment???

NIGGER: Ha ha, now the role-playing game begins. You make the choice. I'll either be your dentist, or your mortician.

On a side note (but still related), how do you men feel about nicknames from your (white or non-black) girlfriend which are affectionate, and related to your colour but not the nasty N word?

I'd never dream of calling my boy a nigga or anything similar, that's awful, but I generally try and steer clear of any comments relating to his colour...although occasionally call his willy my chocolate lollipop, but that's more because of what use I make of it than anything. If I call him anything stupid to do with his appearance, I make it something unrelated to his colour (like making fun of his skinny legs), but am I just being oversensitive for him?

Pet names are acceptable to me. As long as they don't pertain to my skin hue( at least not in a derogatory way), I'm fine with them, in fact, women call me things like honey, sweety, baby, etc. all the time, and some of them barely even know me!
