ALICE IN CHAINS HAS A BLACK LEAD SINGER NOW ??? no joke, I have always LOVED Alice in Chains, they were by far the best band to come out of that grunge movement, so poetic, so intense, that album "dirt" is very special to me. I still think they should change the band's name though since Layne Staley is no longer with them.

As for the thread, I've always wondered why black people dislike metal while many white people seem to enjoy rap and hip hop, I really don't know what made rock in general white music and to be accurate rap is African AMERICAN music anyway so I don't know what makes black people in general so fond of this particular genre, I for one never cared for rap.

I'm sure we'll never see black people in black metal, black metal is essentially racist in nature, most black metal bands (especially nordic black metal bands) are nazi sympathizers, burzum, Taake and a few others come to mind.

I still like Varg Vikernes though, even though he's a nazi and murderer, I happen to enjoy his music, "hvis lyset tar oss" is a masterpiece.

People who call rock white people music do not know that rock and roll was an offshoot of blues created by black men like Little Richard, Chuck Barry among other black men. Auburn "Pat" Hare practically invented heavy chording (which is the base for all heavy metal) on his recording "I'm Gonna Murder My Baby".

Howlin' Wolf, James Cotton, Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland, Robert Johnson the list goes on, without these Brothas there would be no rock of any genre. They are the foundation.

I was raised on Jimi Hendrix, just as much as I raised on Al Green and Parliament. I could never understand why only the boldest Black men (like my Father and a childhood barber of mine) where the few who openly loved rock music.

That is William DuVall, he sung lead on Alice in Chains 'Black Gives Way to Blue' CD.

When Layne Staley, died in 2002. DuVall was unofficially the lead since 2007, but not official until 2009. He has his own band as well. He and Jerry Cantrell have been friends and collaborators even before Layne died. He is awesome live, great singer/performer.

Clearly it's your destiny. Pick up that guitar and meet your fate.

Black Men and Metal = turn off for me, sorry. I stick to the "stereotypical" black man who sings black music... because this is what I like ;)

I think they just mean that rock and metal are stereotyped to be "white people music" cause most people that listen to it (ESPECIALLY metal... like death metal, melodic death metal, etc) are white, not because rock has nothing to do with black people historically.

True, unfortunately the majority of culprits who made these comments are from the black community. I remember being in detroit and being the only black person who like rock music, as the majority of people called in white people music.

Anyway, I LOVE Rock, but to be honest, I don't like "much" metal. But I have to thank the op for showing me sevendust, it sparked my curiousity so I looked them up on youtube and I love it. They have that melody based singing similar to Disturbed, which is the only other metal band I listen to . ( I don't like metal with tons of screaming) but man, I'm now a huge sevendust fan, and I want to say thanks for showing the band.

Skindred (pictured above) is one of my favorite bands. They are a reggae/metal band from Wales. Lead singer is Benji (black guy with dreadlocks). This guy is great. He can scream, rap, and sing melodically..all in the same song. Their best song is "Together"...

    LOL!

Maybe it's because I hate most metal.

True, most do not know our own history. We have painted ourselves into a corner which has lead to us having set restrictions on art and creativity, which is one of the worst things a community or people can do to themselves.
