i posted a topic on a native american messageboard asking why the cherokee felt the need to kick the black people out of the cherokee nation and i got various responses...many of the responses i got were very hateful but some actually did make sense and i could kind of see thier side of things although i think there are two sides to this story.....i was kind of taken aback by the racism i was met with on the board though.. ...i do realize that this doesnt represent all natives and a few of them actually spoke agaisnt some of the racist attacks agaisnt blacks. anyway here's the topic if you want to read it.

I learned years ago how downright racist many of them are...boy was it surprising. It clear who they pattern themselves after.

Why lose sleep over it. Let them have their little reservation I am tired of black folks worrying about Native American blood in them.

:( It's a learned behaviour, and i think in this case, they've learned to displace the negative feelings onto someone else of a different race instead of ending the vicious cycle and changing for the good.

They didn't learn that behavior..that's bullshit..You can't blame one mans hatred on another mofo..

Indians feel the way they do because they do..PERIOD..

When they made their so-called trail of tears THEY DRAGGED ENSLAVED AFRICANS BEHIND THEM LIKE DOGS..

You'd think they would free their BLACK captives in the face of such WHITE injustice...but not them..they are too wicked and vile BY NATURE.

are you from the nation of islam or something? just a question because that sounds like something the NOI would say about whites.

you have to remember that alot of these blacks were taken in by native americans as "slaves" as a way to help them escape white oppression. now its true some natives treated their slaves jsut as bad as whites. but often the form of slavery was completely different from the type of chattle slavery whites had going on. also i heard that it was mainly the white-indians who owned slaves not the full blooded natives.

Okay first I'm going to post a disclaimer here that I DO NOT speak for the Cherokee Nation (western or eastern band) Nor do I know everything that there is to know about native or black issues... I'm a white woman how could I know everything... that said

I was very surprised to hear that the Cherokee were kicking anyone out of the tribe no matter what the color. My fiance, who died almost 4 years ago now.. wow...., was Cherokee. His father was born in OK near the rez and his mom was Italian. He went through the roles to prove that his g-g-grandmother was on the "Trail" from NC to OK so that he could be counted as native. The American government states that you can only claim Native heritage if you are at least 1/4 blood. Many natives feel that this is just the government trying to kill off with numbers what they couldn't kill off physically. How many other races of people do you know have to PROVE what % they are? It is rediculous. Therefore, many NDN's, want people to claim there blood to keep the nation alive. My fiance used to do role checks for others to seek out their blood line. He said lots of these people were white and on the "Native wanna be bandwagon" but he would tell them that if they were willing to accept that they were native that they might have to accept that there was black there as well because there were many NDN and black connections.

The night my fiance died he made me promise that the baby I was carrying would be counted in the Western Band of Cherokee. I'm in the process. My little girl is exactly 1/4.... enough for Uncle Sam to agree and hopefully enough for the tribe to agree as well.
