you can't force people to socialize with others, based on race...

it doesn't make them a racist tho...or a necessarily bad person..

it's a freedom that people have the right to enjoy...

this scenario reminds me of my highschool days, where the lunchrooms in mixed schools, were still segregated based on popular belief.

black kids would typically sit with other black kids, whites with whites, etc... I remember, back in 2000, not 1960, where one side of the lunchroom was obviously filled with white kids, while the other one was filled with black kids.

however, you would still see some mixing...

jocks would sit together regardless of color...they would sit together with fellow football players....wrestlers would sit with other wrestlers, soccer types would sit with other soccer types...

this optional segregation goes on because some people prefer to be around people that can relate to them......

but, like I said, not everyone chooses to do this, but it happens...

I went to a school that was 50% white....35% black...and the remaining 15% was split between Asians and Latinos.......we actually had two different cafeterias....one cafeteria was designed for kids that brought their lunches to school (though you could buy pizza, Subway sandwiches etc.) and the other cafeteria...which sold the usual fast food but also had hot meals with side dishes and desserts....this cafeteria generally had people that bought lunch at school.

No suprise then that 90% of white kids brought their lunches to school and they sat in the former cafeteria......most blacks, Latinos and Asians purchased their lunches at school and they sat in the latter cafeteria. It was the most blatant segregation I ever saw except for one table........the table I sat at.

My friends ranged the color and ethnicity spectrum. One friend was Ethiopian & Jamaican......another was half Spanish and half Polish.......another was Mexican.......one was Irish and Native American.........another was Saudi Arabian....one guy was Phillipino.....another was Eritrean....and then there was me. We looked like a rainbow that sat between two pools....one completely black and the other completely white......I wish kids coming up today could experience that sort of thing.....

Color doesn't equal culture and commonality......unfortunately....most people don't realize that....

Its not really surprising in the South. People just accept the status quo. People like pretending everything is good when its not. The civil rights act only changed the law not people. Its no surprise you hear about segregated proms, the jena problems among other things.

Some parts of the south are overrated in terms of racial mixing....but I think that has more to do with the fact that the black population is largest in the South.

That means that it is fairly easy for blacks to socialize with other blacks...since there are plenty of establishments geared toward blacks. In other parts of the nation....blacks HAVE to go to predominantly white establishments since there aren't many other options.

I'd rather deal with a Good Ole' Boy southern Bubba...than a paternalistic, hypocrite Yankee anyday. Good Ole' Bubba will never pull punches with you....he either will respect you or hate your guts. Yankee Man will look down his nose at Bubba and think he is better....but he will harbor just as much if not more prejudice. Bubba doesn't mind living next to you....Yankee man will move 20 miles down the road just to get away from you.

I used to have really negative feelings towards the south..

but during my last trip to south carolina, I stayed at the house of a friend of my father, and a white guy (bubba lookin guy :) ) came over and stayed for dinner, like he was a part of the family..

I know this happens all over the country, but I was impressed because I always seen so many negative racial images (jena 6, draggings, etc) of the south, living up here in Philly.

The bad reputation is certainly deserved but the national media (largely based in the Northeast and West Coast) tilts public perception. The whites in those places are often "ethnic" whites so they feel they are in no way responsible for what happened during slavery....often using the antecdote...."My great-grandparents came from (enter Euro nation) they were poor....we don't owe black people anything because we didn't have slaves." Yet they discriminate just as much.....for no apparent reason.
