STUDY FINDS BLACKS MORE LIKELY TO BE EXECUTED; Especially if the Victim is White
    (August 9, 2007)

A first of its kind study released last week confirmed a long-held suspicion of many African Americans: The persons most likely to be given the death penalty and actually executed in this country are Blacks who kill whites.

The study released in the August issue of American Sociological Review based its finding on an examination of the outcomes of 1,560 people sentenced to death in 16 states between 1972 and 2002.

It addressed the issue of actual executions, not just being given the death penalty since everyone given a death sentence is not always executed.

According to the study's co-author, Ohio State University sociology and political science professor David Jacobs, the persons most likely to be executed are Blacks who kill whites followed by Hispanics who kill whites. By contrast, Blacks given the death penalty for killing other Blacks or non-whites were far less likely to be executed.

The study found a Black person killing a white person was more than twice as likely to be executed than a white person killing a non-white. Jacobs said the study shows t "the post-sentencing capital punishment process continues to place greater value on white lives."

Well, I would also like to know the breakdown of how many blacks are getting arrested for killing whites (and the opposite, whites arrested for killing blacks), how many are actually getting convicted, and how many are actually getting the death sentence.

If twice as many blacks are actually arrested for killing whites, then the numbers are going to be like that all the way down the line. (Even though it's likely there are prejudicial reasons for the arrest rate in the first place) The conclusion of the article would be stronger if it said, for instance, the number arrested is the same, but the execution rate is 50% higher.

I am not disputing the conclusion at all and would be the first to agree that the penal system is flawed and infected with racism. Just thinking out loud a little...

Oh, i've known that for the longest time. It was my law professor who first brought it to my attention in about 2001.

And in other news...water is wet.

    :p

    Sorry, I couldn't help myself. :D

I thought this was common knowledge. At least amongst African Americans.
