I don't know why, but i was never among those who thought Bubba was "the first black president". Because to me, "the first black president" doesn't triangulate his black acquiantances when it's convenient for him, allow 400,000 Africans to be slaughtered, cut welfare for poor, struggling inner city blacks and he certainly doesn't execute a retarded black man to appeal to "moderates".

And unfortunately, until Jan 2008, many were drinking the Kool-Aid. Oh, he has an office in Harlem, they say. He went to Africa, they would point out. And to them i say, the incarceration rate for black males increased during his presidency. George W Bush had a more diverse cabinet than his ugly ass ever did and Bush doesn't exactly care for black folks. Clinton's icon was J William Fulbright, an arch-segregationist.

And yet black folks swooned over this buffon for 16 years. Unbelievable!!!!

I think a lot of blacks felt marginalized by the Reagan years and Bush #41 only had one term so he didn't get to establish as much of a legacy. If Clinton had come around at a different time...he might have been seen much differently.

Let's not forget that blacks weren't the only ones to get fooled. His administration pushed NAFTA...and now...all of those Rust Belt workers that loved him are suffering because of it....

Also,Chosen that Bush's dad picked a house slave Clarence Thomas instead of Leon Higginbotham. Reagan did nonething for Black-Americans and had people to dismantle civil rights legislation even opposing the Martin Luther King holiday. Clinton at least understood Blacks had a rapport with them. Don't forget Clinton did not get along with Jimmy Carter whom Blacks supported as well.

Read Clarence Thomas' novel that just came out last year....he's not as much of a 'Tom' as some think. Conservative yes...but that is more related to his Gullah & Catholic upbringing....and the words he's got for the "woe is me...rich girl from Yale" types that talked all that s*** about Obama....very interesting stuff....as well as his remarks about how Democrats patronize blacks until someone black either runs against them or decides that they want to be in power but not hooked up to the traditional machine (ahem...Obama).

I only lived through two years of Reagan but I've never heard anyone black say positive things about him. Usually, blacks and whites experience the same things to different degrees ("When America has a cold...black America has the flu") but rarely is there such a distance as when people talk about the Reagan years.

Clinton didn't get along with Carter because they were the same person. The primary difference between them is that Clinton came second and had a chance to study Carter's errors. Clinton understood that moving to the center gave him the best chance to win.....he won the presidency twice even when Democratic numbers in the House and Senate fell following the GOP takeover of 1994. You'd think they'd get along...but no...

I'm starting to think that Obama will be to Dems what Reagan is to Repubs.....

I'm not sure you guys know this, but things were not as bad for blacks during the Reagan years as many have stated. If anything, there was a slight improvement. The growth of the black middle class started in about 1972 and continued to boom right into the 2000s to where it is today. The growth mainly accelerated from about 1976 to the early 90s. But for four years, these were the years which have been known as the Reagan years. Now granted, he had a Democratic Congress at the time but he got them to do whatever he wanted kinda like how Bush is running circles around Reid and Pelosi. Also, things got worse for the black poor but so did the white poor. Poor people in general got shook like a mutha during the Reagan years. After cutting and cutting taxes for the wealthy, poor people were left out in the cold. But the black middle class somewhat swole in the 80s mainly because of the creation of newer job opportunities that weren't available years before.

Of course, the economic progress with undeniably better under Bill Clinton but blacks were not as bad under Reagan as we think, at least for average income blacks.

P.S. Chosen, can you clarify what you were trying to say about Clarence Thomas? I don't get you.

That's what was so absurd about the emergence of Hillary Clinton as a "working class warrior" and patron saint of blue collar America during the primary. The Clinton's were all about the neoliberal free trade agenda when they were in power. I still can't believe she didn't take more flack when it was revealed that her campaign chair, Mark Penn, and Bubba were both working with the Columbian government on a new trade liberalization deal while she was attacking Obama over NAFTA.

I'm glad that the Clintons were exposed for what they really are during the Democratic primary. Although, the revelation of their true nature shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone who remembers Ricky Ray Rector, Sista Souljah and Bill Clinton being sued by the NAACP when he was Governor of Arkansas for refusing to enforce the voting rights act. It's really disheartening that so many black people in this country were fooled so easily by their empty pandering in the 90s.

It would've been more than a little ironic had Clinton told Obama to kiss his "black ass."

Basically what I'm saying is that black folks are quick to castigate Clarence Thomas but have nothing to say about the so-called "black leaders" that rushed to the Clinton trough in support of a candiate they thought could win (and give them cushy jobs) over a rare generational candidate like Obama.

All of the sorry displays of die-hard Hillary supporters and their sense of entitlement over a black man (yes Geraldine Ferraro...I'm talking to you)...Thomas basically said that type of thing happens when a black man tries to rise up amongst liberals. I'm not a conservative but I realize that Dems. like to patronize blacks for their vote but will cut them down quickly if they aspire to be anything more than an NAACP-joining, occasional protesting, bible scripture quoting tool for East Coast Ivy-League educated paternalistic white politicians who know what's best for the black community.

The GOP doesn't have a reputation for doing much for blacks but the Democratic Party isn't any better....that's where him and I agree.

Most of the adults in my family would agree with you about Reagan...they all seemed to do pretty well under Reagan.

My point about Reagan is that a large bloc of people struggled mightily under Reagan (including the white working class "Reagan Democrats") yet he isn't remembered for any of that.

He was a bit of a teflon president....the failed "War on Drugs"...Iran Contra affair.....etc. don't stick to him....though I'm sure if Obama or even Clinton had those problems....it would stick...not just on them but on their entire party.

First and foremost Reagan supported the Apartheid government of South Africa,a place where a Jim Crow government went national in Africa. All the words of that conservatives say of King are moot when it comes to that country. Saying that the sanctions would "hurt" the Blacks as if they are not hurt enough. I lived in that era and I never seen him as one of the greatest presidents in the US. He was a good actor in the part of President and the sad part was it was real. I never forget when he call the HUD Secretary Samuel Pierce, the only Black in his cabinet "Mayor".

First of all, if you didn't actually live, go to school and work through Reagan, the first Bush and Clinton, I don't need to hear you.

Secondly his "first Black president" tag came from the fact that a) he liked Southern cooking b) played sax c) liked women too much and d) was hounded and second guessed by the Republicans from day one.

That he was able to achieve all he did despite this was amazing. Revisionist history would have you think otherwise. Thus my distrust of people opinions who weren't actually there.

Third, the source is Fox News so I will be taking it with a grain of rock salt.

KC,you hit one on the head. Also,Clinton's attitude towards Blacks in his administration is beyond tokenism. The treatment Obama is going to receive will be almost identical to Clinton's when he gets sworn in.
