Just saw this video posted online of basketball player Ben Simmons' parents and his dad is an American that moved to Australia in 1989 and developed an Australian accent. https://twitter.com/60Mins/status/990551514035859456 I could understand that happening if you are kid growing up in another country, but I didn't know that could happen to adults as well.
Don't you remember the whole thing about Madonna after she moved to the UK?? Funny thing is in recent interviews she seems to be back to an American accent. I think some people just want to do that. Others are just prone to pick up other people's mannerisms and way of speaking. People shift their regional accents all the time. Think about all the actors who work on dropping their accents too. Or don't you know of people who have been in the US for many years who have dropped their accents, and then others who don't?
I thought people and celebs do that on purpose for attention. He has been there for 29 years, but i don't think that could happen to a adult naturally. I'm trying to think what would be his reason if he is doing it on purpose. Is it to fit in.
Could be. I'm guessing that in 30 years it's just more of a case of because he's immersed in it. I know some people who have been in the US for that amount of time who have dropped their accents, others who have not. I've seen people with pretty heavy southern (or other regional) accents who will drop them rather quickly when moving to a different area...then sometimes it will be more noticeable again when they are tired.
It's far less likely among adults, but nearly thirty years is a long time. Besides, his accent wasn't super-thick. Lol
