Michele Bachmann Proposes Mandatory Ultrasounds For Women Seeking Abortions

Republican presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) proposed a bill on Thursday that would force women in the early stages of pregnancy to have a physically invasive and medically unnecessary ultrasound procedure before they can legally consent to having an abortion.

The "Heartbeat Informed Consent Act" requires doctors to make the fetal heartbeat visible and audible to the woman prior to the abortion procedure and to describe the ultrasound image to her in detail, even if she prefers not to hear about it. If the woman is between four and five weeks pregnant, the doctor has to perform a "transvaginal ultrasound" in order to hear the heartbeat, which involves a probe and can be physically uncomfortable for the woman.

Bachmann says the bill is intended to coax women who are considering getting abortions into changing their minds and carrying their pregnancies to term.

“A study by Focus on the Family found that when women who were undecided about having an abortion were shown an ultrasound image of the baby, 78% chose life," she said in a statement.

But Dr. Stanwood, who performs multiple abortions a week, said that in her experience, performing an ultrasound on a pregnant woman who has already decided to have an abortion never actually changes the woman's mind.

Bachmann is a fucken moron. This is the type of garbage that did her in, now she calls herself the come back kid. The comeback kid my ass!!!! If a woman who is carrying the fetus does not want to bring him to the world she can undergo abortion or partial birth abortion anytime during her pregnancy, be it 6 weeks or 38 weeks. None of the idiot politicians business!!! Focus on what matters; education, jobs, debts, closing down borders, decreasing crime rates, cutting back on unnecessay wars, keeping an eye on greedy wall streets, etc..... than abortion, homosexuality and prayer in schools.

I find her position morally abhorrent and untenable. She assumes women are stupid, and do not realize what being pregnant means. It's very clear she also intends this not only as a strategic move for her personally, but also as a way to pressure women into making the choice SHE feels is correct for them. Who the hell is she to decide that for another woman?

Using Focus on the Family as a source for anything but garbage is repellent. As it's known around these parts by thinking people "Focus on your own damned family."

she obviously thinks women are too stupid to make decisions for themselves & dictating how licensed physicians must practice is idiotic...next thing you know we'll be telling plumbers & mechanics how to do their jobs. her whole notion is repugnant & she's completely out of touch with reality

I don't know about over there, but here in Australia women get ultrasounds before abortions already.
