It is sad Kid but I had to admit to being selfish that too many brothers brings more competition.

Maybe white Australian women might use their vote to have their views known about immigration. We need choice too

Obviously, you don't get it. These are oppressed Africans from the Sudan -- Darfur. You need to read up on what's goin' on in Darfur.

Just as a different point of opinion - I don't have a problem with them filling the African quota for the year. This is for the following reasons:

    * We are still allowing in refugees up to the normal yearly quota
    * I don't think it's good to bring in a whole heap of refugees from one community at once - why not split it up a bit - every refugee is needy?
    * Whether they are or are not integrating better than anyone else - I can't say (in my experience, there is no problem) but if the government feels they are unable to offer the required support for these specific communities, then they shouldn't let them in.
    * The quota is currently 1/3 of our total intake, and this has been significantly higher over the past several years
    * The quota will "restart" at the beginning of the next financial year

Our government has the opportunity to allow in whoever it wants in whatever quantities it wants - as does every other country. Our government does what it thinks is best for the general population. We have no specific obligation to any one country or continent. In fact, given that we are the "west" in the South Pacific, we should probably be focussing our attention on the region and helping our neighbours.

Now, do I think this is racsist - no. Because the definition of racism is:
The belief that one 'racial group' is inferior to another and the practices of the dominant group to maintain the inferior position of the dominated group. Often defined as a combination of power, prejudice and discrimination.
How is that racist - because the quota has been filled and they're not increasing it?
The comments were that they are not integrating as well as was hoped. If this is in fact true - then why not say it. If it is not true, then there is the problem.
Anyway, the same can be said for other large intakes of refugees and migrants - Vietnamese, Lebanese, Greek, Italian and Chinese. And this has been said, over the years. In fact, the same could be said for people all over the world. I know of many Australians living in London who drink Australian beer, hang out with Aussies and keep mostly Aussie friends. The same could be said about them. A fact is a fact.

Just my 2c worth. I'd prefer not to be flamed for what you may percieve as unpalatable opinions.[/b]

Haha - hell no...Just giving a different point of view, that's all.
I don't support Howard for many, nay, most things, but his cracking down on immigration - I do support.
Note that I did not say THE WAY he is cracking down on immigration, but that it has occured.
That is legal and illegal immigration.

FYI, the current refugee intake will be from Iraq, which is probably quite fitting, since we have illegally gone and attacked these people and actually made them into refugees in the first place. we should probably clean up our own mess first anyway.

And by definition, all refugees are oppressed in some way, anyway. No refugee is more worthy than any other - that's the essence of what I'm trying to say.

I think it would be more proactive to advocate for more resources to be available for ALL refugees, a continued crack down on illegal immigration, and an increase in the total intake of refugees (within the numbers our country can handle).

Once again, just my 2c worth.
By the way, I am simply offering another point of view. My opinions aren't set in stone.

hmmm - oh well...That's good then, because it means his policy is reflecting my values and opinions.

To each his own, hey!? :) That's then great thing about a pluraistic society!

By the way, please don't think I have anything against the Sudanese people - My experiences show them to be lovely people who, given the right opportunities and encouragement, are hardworking and driven people. They are a very respectable community. And personally, I would prefer that all our refugees came from there, or another African community....

But, I don't think this isn't an issue for bleeding hearts and emotion. And I do think it requires some more rational understanding of the situation. That's why we have a government - that's their job.
