A survey of African residents in Melbourne has prompted more allegations of racism in Victoria, this time against the police. March 16, 2010 The report by a coalition of Melbourne legal centres claims discriminatory treatment of African youths by police has led to increased tensions. Thirty young people were interviewed over the past year, as part of the study by the Springvale Monash Legal Service. Community development worker Shane Reside has told ABC local radio that most reported feeling over policed and unfairly hassled. "The kinds of things that they were describing was being stopped several times in a single day by the police to give them their name and address and to explain themselves," he said. "Sometimes this was when they were hanging out at night or around a train station, but for a lot of these young people it was actually part of their daily lives, you know, like on their way to school, on their way to childcare to pick up their baby brother." "These are the kinds of day-to-day activities they were doing when they found that the police would come and just stop them randomly, which is certainly not something that happens for the rest of the community." Some of those interviewed also reported being racially taunted and roughed up by police officers, but were reticent to make formal complaints. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland says there are racial tensions between some police officers and African youth, but big efforts are being made from the recruitment level up to stamp out intolerant attitudes. Australia: Vic police bash African youths African youths have been racially targeted, taunted and bashed by police across Melbourne, according to an explosive report. Victoria Police officers are accused of labelling young African men "monkey" and "black c***", taking photographs of them gathered on the streets for intelligence purposes and, in one case, taking off their uniforms to bash black men in a public park. Police routinely target young Africans by repeatedly arresting and questioning them about crimes, the report by a legal service says, and demand youths give their names and addresses to officers several times each day. When young Africans complain, front-line officers increase random searches and questioning, the report says. i agree. in the first report you put up there was a comment made: "This is not a new problem. With every wave of migration that's come into this country, we've had problems with youths," he said. "If you go back far enough it was the Italian wave, the Greek wave, the Vietnamese wave, and what we're seeing now is a wave of migration coming out of Africa, mainly driven by our humanitarian-refugee policy. i remember all too well children being picked on at school because they were, italian, greek (wogs was the name of choice), vietnamese, chinese (nips & slopies). it seems that this country needs time to adjust to new cultures which is completely ridiculous. there was a lot of hatred targeted towards the asian community in the 90's because they were taking a lot of our university spots and many believed that they were taking over our country (lol at that seeing that's what we did in the first place). it's now happening again with the indian community. many believe that our universities are being taken by them and also a few of our companies are employing companies overseas for call centres instead of australia. again, many australians feel anger about that and the outcome is what we are seeing. do i agree with it? no. i do not believe in violence in any way, but unfortunately, there are some people who do. He says a better understanding of their backgrounds is needed before relations with police can improve. "Now I believe some of the police have done quite a tremendous amount of work," Mr Lyimo said. "I believe some police have actually visited some parts of Africa to learn about the environment over there and therefore being able to come back here and deal with the issues. "I still think that what is important is for the police and the local leaders and the youth to have an ongoing dialogue that will eventually address these matters. I haven't heard a thing about the discrimination against Africans, and it is horrifying to learn that. it appears that the community and the police are trying to work together to stamp it out, and i can only hope that they do. The section where some police have actually visited some parts of africa is amazing, and i commend them for it. i must also say that the parts of melbourne where the violence has been happening is known to be quite the rough area. The train station at dandenong is very well known for stabbings etc. and brawling in the streets. http://springvale-dandenong-leader.whereilive.com.au/news/story/street-violence-on-the-rise/ on another note. i was working for some friends over the weekend at the victorian little athletics field championships and overheard a boy of indian decent talking to his parents after a run. he said he was being racially discriminated against because the rules say that if you wear skins under your shorts that they must be the same colour as your shorts or the same shade as your skin. his were white, his skin was not.
I say all of you brothers who are fond of Aussie women board a plane go to their major cities and deposit the fruit of your loin in some of those hot Aussie babes. Multiply.... create some dark brown skin babies in major Aussie cities like Londoners. LoL Blk folks one thing we good at is procreating.
how do african immigrant communities get along with the Aboriginal folks? tensions? generally friendly?
Wouldnt thought they mix that much, because the aborigines live out in the outback, and Africans more in the city.
not all aboriginals are in outback swaziking....they just don't live in the areas that are mainly populated by africans
Ah okay, its just I always seem to see them in the outback, whenever they on TV.So I thought most lived there. I know a few live in the cities cos they rioted a few years ago. Think it was in Redfern.
Sometimes when we read these stories about discrimination and stories about immigrants and police, we think everyone is anti black. But as you have said other people love black people. As you have given here an example of Australia..
I have actually met quite a few Aussie girls in London. Never got any racist vibes of them. Can spot an Aussie girl, cos she is usually sober. English girls drink alcohol like its water, its usually quite a funny conversion.
