My dad did when we were growing up. For instance; Skinner's Raisin Bran in place of Kellog's Raisin Bran. Sunshine's Hydrox cookies(Hydrox came before Oreos) instead of Nabisco's Oreos. Store brand Frosted Flakes instead of Kellog's. The issue for my father at the time was economics. He believed in saving money. Now that I am older, I would buy cereal like Malt-O-Meal and it would cost less than the major brands like Kellog's, Post, or General Foods. And, in most cases, contains a higher volume than the brand names.

I buy the "real" stuff not the generic stuff.

The generic stuff is NOT the same and doesn't have quite the same taste.

I don't know what worst, buying knock off cereal or knock off sneakers.

No kid should go to school wearing Zike's on a belly filled with Fruit Rings... smdh

What's the point of having kids if you can't provide nice, decent things for them?
I wouldn't fucking dream of having a child if my pockets weren't right.

Knock offs are a waste of money. When it's food it tastes like crap. When it's a purse or a pair of shoes, the quality is lackluster and noticeable. Some things just can't be faked.

    Food definitely tastes different.

I had to go through my school age years wearing prowings (I played basketball in hs) and jeans from kmart with butterflies on the pockets instead of nikes and levis. I won't do that to my kids.

My kids aren't spoiled, they have what they need. If I can treat them to things here and there with my tight budget, and they've earned favor through good behavior or good grades, I am going to give them things from time to time.

Agreed! Generic brands and knock offs aren't my thing. I grew up on that stuff and probably because of that, I'll never be that mom. I'd rather put my hard earned money towards clothes and shoes that won't be destroyed in 2 weeks time. You get what you pay for.

    Generic vs. Brand products.

I think the differences are more psychological than anything else. Unless there's an ingredient missing from the (generic) product which gives the Brand name its "superior" taste or clothing that is more defined, then I'm not really bothered by the (minuscule) differences.

I'm with you there. Personally I don't notice a difference. My parents have always bought brand name foods while growing up, and now I buy generic. Don't notice a difference.

Exactly. And while people often shop at Wal-Mart for their candies and such...I notice that the Dollar stores often have the same candies and then things not sold in big store chains, like the zebra bubblegum...I would just go there if I want to dish up on snacks.

i grew up eating puffed wheat cereal and just a few outfits...my son wears brand names and eats brand name cereal...it's easier to buy what they want then waste your money buying something they won't eat or won't wear

    I believe so,too.
When I was a kid, mom would only buy the brand stuff when there was a sale on the products.
Otherwise we would have the generic counterpart.
In most cases of food items I did not notice a big difference.
Clothes ,especially shoes, sometimes didn't last as long as the brand items, however I did not mind much and still turned out to be a decent person without having every little thing by big brands.
Now being an adult (without kids of my own so far though), I also buy a mix of brands and generic articles.

I can make a case in which "generic" is better than the brand. Case in point: Oreos vs. Winn-Dixie cookies.

Oreos are nasty. They taste nasty and the cream in the cookies are undesirable, and yet people still foam over it like crazy. I don't get it. However, at my local Winn-Dixie, they also sell store-brand products and quite frankly, I would buy them. Not because they are cheaper, but the quality is better than brand products. The cookies are always to die for and I ate them when I was a kid and I still do.

They have the perfect taste and the cream is perfect. Compared to Oreos, the "generic" is of better quality than the nasty shit the Oreo makers produce.

    This is just one example.

The money is spent on the "Brand" not on any secret ingredient that makes it taste better.

I'm with everyone else on clothes though, you get what you pay for, not that designer labels are important for a kid IMO but clothes from a decent store is important.

I don't buy my kids uniform school shirts from a supermarket at £3.50 for 2, I pay the extra and buy them from the school shop in town at £6.50 for 1! because they're very good quality and British made, same as the rest of the uniform I purchase there.

When it comes to the kids clothes I like NEXT, TK Maxx (although I hate the store layout, bloody mess) and Mothercare.

sorry sir, you are wrong. you can taste the difference between generic and non generic. I remember spending the night at a friends house when I was younger and they served generic fruit loops and not only the texture(the crunch of the cereal) but the taste was different. needless to say i was hungry and ate it but I told my mom they had cereal in a bag and not a box that tasted funny...

Clothes are very important and you need to find those that have a great deal of longevity and durability, more so, the colors won't fade quicker, so I could definitely see your point there. I've been there before and it's pretty funny how we have to have a certain uniform from a certain store.

I'm still willing to hold that your experiences are generally based more on a psychological level and less on the quality of the good based on labels. Plus, you have to consider that the generic labels came from bags, instead of boxes, hence the quality may seem to be of lesser taste.

I do not buy generic cereals. Ever. I don't like them.

I do, however, buy some other Target brand stuff.

For instance, I started buying the Target brand mac and cheese boxes because they were significantly cheaper than buying Kraft brand.

For my lunches, I started buying the Target brand single serving cups of mac and cheese.

A couple of weeks ago, Target was out of their brand, so I was "forced" to buy Kraft's individual cups. The difference is night and day. After being accustomed to the Target brand, Kraft's mac and cheese is ridiculously more cheesy and the cheese is creamier than the Target brand.

Not that I'll continue buying Kraft now, I won't, but there is definitely a difference between name brand food items and store brand food items.

The thing with buying generic foods over name brand foods is that if the generics aren't made by the brand name food company, they WILL be different. The differences may be more subtle depending on the types of food, but the non-name brand company will not have the exact formula the name brand company uses.

Edit: Also, they likely won't be buying the ingredients from the same distributor/company, and different brands of the same thing, will have slight taste variances.
