The issue is there have been some pretty bad disasters across the US in the last few years, encompassing vaster real-estate and victims. But they don't receive the intense coverage because NY, LA and Philadelphia are the biggest media markets in the country. And it so happens these are the markets affected by Sandy, so it is not just national news, but local. So if people fight in gas lines, instead of NY Channel 8 reporting it for the 11pm news, you have GMA also nationally reporting it.
