I am a huge fan of drumlines and and Drum Corps International. Always wanted to play the drums when I was younger (or the trumpet), but Mom said no, so I played the flute and piccolo. But never lost my love for the drums, whether it be a collegiate drumline, a drum & bugle corp or just a bunch of kids drumming on overturned buckets. Haha! Oh, the stuff that went on at band camp...! I wear the name "band geek" proudly. Those bus trips to away football games could get a little racy...!!!
I love the drums. I started loving them in HS(listening to the school band) and when I heard Metallica for the first time. Their drummer is amazing, dude uses two basedrums and not many people do or can do that. I can't play for shit(and yeah I tried lol), but I love pretending.
Lol! I loved everything about marching band! Particularly the drummers! And playing the piccolo gave me a nice embouchure which comes in handy in, um, other endeavors.
I was never a big bass drum fan, but the last diddy on this is kinda cool. Am I the only one here that likes drumlines???
My high school's marching band had a couple of riveting drum routines for pep rallies, parades and football games. But, none can come close to the college bands and their drumlines. I saw an international brass and drum performance on public television. Then I saw the film Drumline. I liked the performance scenes. I did not know that being on a drumline in a college marching band required a lot more than skill, discipline and dedication.
You probably saw DCI - Drum Corps International. Those are serious competitions. One of their major competitions comes to Allentown, PA every summer. I got to go last year but it rained almost the entire time and we had seats in the first couple of rows - not good. You need to be at the top of the bleachers to fully appreciate a show. The one thing I don't like is that in recent years, too much emphasis has been placed on the flag show and not enough on the percussion. Imo. More (cowbell) drums please!!
The flag squad is a distraction. I remember another drum and brass show(on PBS) from England called Blast. It was all brass and percussion, and yes, a flag squad was also there. It wasn't a competition, just a musical show. But it was quite good.
im totally into drumlines, i actually have been playing in one for about 10 years and traveled all around because of it!
