the movie american sniper came out with high praise and doing well at the box office.

well michael moore called snipers cowards due to them killing his uncle.

seth rogen came out and compared the movie to inglorious bastards scene of the nazi propaganda movie.

kid rock and others strike back at seth rogen and moore.

what do you think? was it unamerican

I happen to admire Michael Moore for many of his documentaries that uncover injustice....

However...I think that what we learn about snipers due to this movie as well as the controversy may be one of our countries "dirty secrets"...much like the CIA torture files...we know it's going on but we don't talk about it

Michael Moore is entitled to his opinion...he has a platform for saying the unpopular

I loved the movie...here is what I don't like...I think snipers should not share their stories...the one that came out to get his 15 minutes of fame over bin laden disgusted me

We tell too much...reveal too much...to be safe some things are better left unsaid but we have this "freedom of speech" liberty that gets us in trouble occasionally...I think freedom of speech should also be recognized as knowing when not to speak

    R. Lee Ermey had once said in an interview in a gun magazine about the uniqueness of snipers. He said that a sniper is the loneliest job in all the services. He brought up legendary Marine Corps sniper Carlos Hathcock and his mission in Vietnam. Being a sniper is an exercise in patience and physical tolerance beyond anything the lay person can endure. They serve two purposes; removal of personnel and intelligence gathering. They can be in the field for days or weeks if necessary. A skilled sniper can hold off a superior force. Snipers can have a God complex when it comes to their job(think back to the film Navy SEALS where Bill Paxton played the unit's sniper and they refer to him as God). Now with today's technology, a sniper doesn't work alone. The sniper has a spotter to give data such as range, wind speed and temperature of the air. Factors that could affect a rifle round's trajectory. Most of these individuals do not share their stories unless it is among themselves in the military community. Then, there are some who want to educate the public of what they have experienced in their time in the military. Is it for profit? Maybe. Is it for fame? I doubt it. In these times, books and films are ways of honoring those who served, serve and have died in the service to their country.

Courage and cowardice are oftentimes confusing to an outsider.

I wouldn't say that snipers are cowards, but I agree that the lionization of Chris Kyle is fucking absurd.

This dude was a fucking murderous psychopath and a pathological liar.

I'm not going to waste time writing any long posts about him. If you take issue with my characterization, do the tiniest bit of reading about this guy and get back to me.

After reading these articles, I think back to when I first heard of Chris Kyle's story. I had read an excerpt from his book American Sniper in Men's Journal magazine. It seemed interesting. But at the same time, I knew a guy who was a navy SEAL and he served in Bosnia. He never talked about his time there a whole lot. He even showed everyone a picture of himself and a buddy who was killed. He was a nice friendly guy. But I don't think he was as psychotic as Kyle was. As to Jesse "The Body" Ventura, one thing one must not do is call him a liar. Ventura was a SEAL before he became a wrestler, then an actor, then governor of Minnesota. But, after 9/11, this country needed heroes and it still does. This story, however, will be left to be decided of its authenticity. Will Chris Kyle be remembered as a hero, or the biggest liar since Baron Munchausen?

G,it seems that Kyle would be elevated as a hero with those confirmed kills in spite that his estate lost to Gov.Ventura.

They're all soldiers, hired to kill to advance Uncle Sam's global-political agenda.

Most people I don't think would have the stomach to really know what soldiers deal with in combat.

It's an ugly business, and the whole idea of sniping can be something of a mindfuck if you think about it.

Not much different than soldiers who specialize in demolitions.
If you ever saw the aftermath of their handiwork, you might struggle to fit them into your idea of an American Hero.

Outstanding posts in this thread in general, Gorath.

I listened to an interview on C2C with Ventura after he won the judgement. Quite compelling a defense. Who knows why Kyle lied.(though many others have verified other heroic aspects of Chris's life)
Ventura said he didn't feel victorious, he just wanted to clear his name - the Marines detested that he took money from a Marine's widow, however, and Ventura acknowledged this. However, he said his income and brand had been hurt by it so he wanted compensation.
