stereotypes can have SOME truth, but it also can be pure fiction and only based on myth

    but.......

where does the myth come from? Did it appear out of nowhere, didnt it have any connection to something that happened/exists in reality, and then it became so spread and started to be applied to everyone from a certain group?
    thats what I mean .

yes perhaps to ONE experience of ONE person and then passing it on. Like white racists saying ONE DrOP of blood makes a person black, in order to enslave all people who are of mixed origins.

or that Jews have tails and horns. or that blacks eat our young. or that all whites are racist just naturally

Jeeze.....I didn't have any idea there are such things said....that's pure fiction of a kind that a sane person could not even say it!!!!!

    I'm amazed.

but thats what I have been saying, stereotypes and myths are not truth, if they were they would be called truths. they are designed by one group of people or individuals against others while having only some basis in truth or NO basis in truth. they are part truth part fiction part bias and prejudice

but all stereotypes are absurd, since no one knows all Black people or all white people. They are assumptions and they are often steeped in bigotry but definitely filled with ignorance.

even when they are harmless, like all black men play basketball or all blacks love fried chicken---hmm there are plenty of black vegetarians, and tons of us blacks who cant dribble a ball :D

Right on, tucker. Stereotypes only have a base of truth in them pertaining to specific individuals who act them out, but biased people normally take what's a stereotype, and then stretch it further, or re-create a bigger and even more derogatory myth from it, making it seem worse than it actually is, only for the sake of exercising bigotry, mainly under the guise of 'innocence' and 'naivety.'

Most people who feed into stereotypes (as well as those who live by their preconceived notions intentionally or unintentionally) usually have no clear perception at all about reality, or even enough human contact out in the real world. In addition, most of these same people lack common knowledge of human nature in general, when taking into account that a person's particular hue of skin, doesn't make them genetically 'this and that' (uncivilized, able to control the media, lazy, cannibalistic, good at martial arts, obsessed with sex, occultist, alcoholic, sodomizers, child-molesters, serial killers, thieves, money sharks, etc.).

Just to expand on this idea - if enough people drivel the same nonsense again and again it can become accepted as fact without question. Afterwards you may have scientific evidence backing that up - but in reality the methodology used to collect the data counts just as much. And in all likelihood it's gonna be biased to support the stereotype.

    Observe.

A couple of the brothas on this website claim BM have the biggest penises. We keep repeating it so often that it becomes a slogan. Eventually we network our idea around various websites, who do the same thing in turn. This is how our idea spreads like wildfire across the net.

So along come the boys from the lab to test out this thesis. How do you suppose they go about collecting evidence? They can't exactly pull down the pants of every random BM who happens to walk down the street. They have to request the information (i.e. it's voluntary). Now wouldn't it be logical to conclude that the guys who submit to such a screening are guys who are already well-endowed?

But what do you suppose happens when the scientists get a sudden influx of raw data that supports the hypothesis? The CONCLUSION: Black Men ARE well endowed. And this drives the female masses crazy becoz it confirms what they already suspected.

And all from a bunch of no-meaning rumours, and some boyish banter.

Hmm...good points here...However, I should add the fact that stereotypes are generally negative

I disagree, there are also "positive stereotypes", such as black people are excellent dancers, blacks can sing, black men have big dicks, white women are easy to get along with, white women are less inhibited and freakier in the bedroom, and so on.

The only difference is that people don't complain about the "positive" stereotypes.

Whether or not they are positive, stereotyping is still stupid and often delusional to reality.

Well, "Black ppl can sing" or "Black ppl can dance" is a stereotype that is more often true than it isn`t!!

But then "Black ppl are less intelligent" or "All Black men are great lovers" just aren`t true!!

So...there`s just no rule...some stereotypes really apply to a large majority and are "true"!
Some are just the fruit of racism, ignorance or exaggeration...I guess we just gotta use some common sense and be picky! :)

You are right, some things can be true.

The difference is, was the thought/stereotype started from what was really seen and experienced by many, or was the idea started by a racists who want to take a minority or negative about a few of a race and make it appear like its for all to make a point.

This is what I was thinking when I titled the thread.

This line of thinking is dangerous.

How can there be a "positive stereotype"?

Stereotype's are nothing more than urban legends. Wives tales, utter BS.
I know most people think of Black folks being able to sing and dance, or better at athletics, are supposedly "positive stereotypes", however, they are still completely untrue.

I hate it when White people approach me in clubs, thinking that I must know all the latest dance steps, JUST BECAUSE I'M BLACK.

Of course they always have some stupid shit to say to me like "hey I know you can dance, you're Black"....while many of you Black men on here may see that as a "compliment" of sorts, I see it as patronizing and insulting to our entire race. We are 'expected' to automatically know how to dance, sing, and shoot hoops. Of course many of us couldn't dance for shyt, I'm not 15 years old anymore, so all the hot, fast dance steps are out for me. Yet and still, when I get near a dance floor, everyone thinks whatever I do is a dance step. I mean I've been some places, where there were like two of us (Black men) in the whole place, and as soon as one of us approaches the dance floor, all eyes are on us to cut a step or two. One of us scratches our ass, and it's the new dance step for the entire club. Simply because we're Black.

They might as well say "hey, I know you eat fried chicken and watermelon, steal cars, and smoke crack, you're Black.

A sterotype is a stereotype. Period.
