ALL stereotypes are true, that's why they rule the world

Some (if not many) people in the world actually believe this, and as they say, perception is reality, but what's YOUR individual perception on THIS reality?

Try to keep it tolerant. No bigotry, please.

I try to take people on a case by case basis, not on news blurbs, stats or where they live. I treat people like people(try to be cool with everyone till given a reason to not be)

The thing about stereotypes is that they usually apply to a great number of a group and sometimes exceptions are few and far between. That's why it can be hard to let them go, but I'm not in any shape, form, or fashion approving of them though ...

It depends on the person.....stereotypes are true for some people and not true for others.....everyone fits atleast one stereotype though...

well, what do YOU think about it, since you started the topic?

Stereotypes have a base of truth in them, or they wouldn't have been created, no smoke without fire.

Even so, generalizing is simply not the case because not all who belong to a certain race( too many to give examples here), sex (women can't drive), age range (young women are naive and easy) conform to them, and sometimes certain features are not even specific to a certain group (BM cheat)...so, that's what I think.

Personally, I don't like stereotypes. I think that they're a lazy way of thinking. Instead of using your own independent judgement, you're relying on past experience or someone else to do your thinking for you. Sometimes, they may help protect you from danger or from being hurt again.

If you must use a stereotype, then limit it to the people you've met. That way, you're leaving room for exceptions from other people's experience to prove it wrong.

For example, instead of saying all people of this type behave a certain way, just say "many people of this group act this way" or "those that I've met behave that way". One person's truth may not represent someone else's truth.

I don't agree with the notion that stereotypes always have a base of truth in them.

If you make up something and repeat it often enough, some people will start to internalized it. Once they internalized it their expectations will affect their perception and they will develop a kind of "selective vision". For example, people who were told that "only old and fat white women date black men" and internalized this notion will most likely recognize to a higher degree couples which will confirm the stereotype than couples which disprove it.

Or if, for example, someone internalized the notion that all blacks are criminals, and this someone sees a picture of a black criminal in the newspaper, s/he will probably think: "Oh yeah, of course he is black", because it's confirming the learned stereotype, while the picture of the white criminal at the same page will most likely only get a quick glance.

The same thing that most of you do, that's why I made this topic. I was just wanted to see what most people in here would say (which is all very similar to one another).

all stereotypes have Some truth to it but not all are true, thats what makes them stereotypes and not the TRUTH.

stereotype example--all black men have big penises. NoT true, not all of us do and that is a fact.

I feel I havent been very clear on this topic.

Thats how I feel about it and what I practice. But I thought the question was what do we think about them, not if they are right or wrong, which we all know stereotyping is wrong.

Some stereotypes are observations that apply to many people of the same race, gender or age range, so they have some base of truth in them. Its not a lazy way of thinking, unless you automatically think that about everybody belonging to a certain group without having the open-mindness to try to know the individual first and then think something of him/her. I would apply that even further, as in thinking something about a certain individual, because someone told you so when it may be very far from the truth in fact. Untill you check yourself, you can't really know.

yes, stereotypes have a base of truth in them. the stereotype starts from somewhere first, and only then it is repeated untill it becomes internalized and its what some see first. There can be 2 cases, as I said: 1, when it comes from observation of real traits that are common to many people belonging to a certain group or are even scientifically proven, 2. when it comes from hate (I think the example I gave with BM cheating and the example you gave were such examples, and if you hate or dislike some group, thats when you start noticing only things to confirm your dislike, well, some do) Even so, many BM cheat and many BM are criminals, and its also true about WM, so they have some truth in them

when you say ALL about something, that is not true about anything, good or bad beliefs, because no one is exactly identical with someone else. So that wasnt the point, I know that and I think we all do, that it's not about "all being somehow".

So this brings more light to my previous statement, which I now hope you understand (don't have to agree though)

Yes, they are stereotypes with a base of truth in them, if they were true, they would be called truths    , and if they didn't have any base of reality to rely on, they wouldn't have appeared !
