The need for security services in Iraq has led many Africans to go there and take up risky security jobs. However, some have returned with the money they've made, doing this security work, to set-up businesses and buy land.

Would you ever take on a risky job in another part of the world if it meant you could make some good money and return back home to improve your living standards? Or, do you think it's best to stay where you are and try and find the opportunity under your feet?

This is a great question. Coming from Canada where the social safety net is relatively well built, I have not faced this kind of decision. Most people come TO Canada to build lives or nest eggs, not necessarily leave (except doctors lol).

If my family was starving, or living in a shanty town, yes I bet I would seriously consider doing something risky to help improve our lives. Even without the threat of starvation, many Canadians are off fighting in Afghanistan to help improve the lives of the locals there (or for whatever reason they choose to go).

How likely, in some of these places, is it to find/build opportunity for oneself?

My situation is similar to Athena's. Australia has great social security, so I would never need to do anything.

It would depend on what the job is. I enjoy interesting activities and am not old enough to be scared by too many things. Nor am I afraid to die. If the job was a) interesting to me regardless of money and b) morally supportable by my own standards, then yes I probably would.

If I was from a country without the security Australia has, it is difficult to know, but I probably would go.

Well, to earn money and how much always depends on the question "What are you willing to do?"

To take a high risk must be motivated by a good reason. I.e. for your own future or the future of your family or to change something you don´t like.

For me.. I always took high risks, but I wouldn´t run into suicide. You need to know, what you can handle and what you cannot. And to live risky also means that you swim in an ocean of sharks, so there is a high risk to loose this money again, very soon.

It helps nobody, when you are killed.. what´s going on with your family then-afterwards?

For the Africans who do not encounter the IED`s and suvive in one piece there is a good future for them.
