Deep in your heart-of-darkness it is likely you’ve noticed the well-publicized and continuous failure of African-American K-12 students to read and write as well as ‘real’ people. You may well have made note of black youths’ statistically undeniable proclivity for gun violence, unrepentant fashion, and bad TV. If so, you may have also ascribed these socially inconvenient attributes to some type of unspeakable genetic code. If that is the case, do be careful not to reflect on these matters in mixed company, that is unless, you are a Hell’s Angels biker babe or a neo-Nazi skinhead. In the unicorn world we live in, free thought is a luxury we cannot afford when the price is offending someone or a protected species. Nonetheless, there certainly seems to be some correlation between atrocious academic performance and skin color. If sub-par ACT and SAT test scores are not affected by skin pigmentation, then perhaps urban zip codes are the culprit. Those of you who secretly believe that black folk can’t learn too good, and I have encountered several K-12 teachers that do, take a look the data on true Africans, who’ve immigrated to the United States.According to U.S. Census Bureau data, in an analysis performed by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, African immigrants here were more likely to be college educated than any other immigrant group. Not only that, but African immigrants are also more highly educated than any other native-born ethnic group including white Americans. (Gasp) The 48.9% of all African immigrants that have earned a college degree is slightly higher than the percentage of degreed Asian immigrants, twice the rate of native-born whites, and four times the rate of native-born African Americans. Of the African-born population in the United States age 25 and older, 86.4% reported having a high school diploma or higher, compared with 78. 9% of Asian-born immigrants, and 76.5% of European-born immigrants, respectively. These figures contrast with 61.8% percent of the total foreign-born population. Immigrantgroups in general tend to have higher high school graduation rates than the native-born general American population which averages about 70%. It stands to reason, as few things do anymore, that the personal incomes of African immigrants exceeds that of African-Americans. When stationed in East Africa, I found Kenyans, Ugandans, and Congolese to be both intellectually competitive and highly industrious. Unfortunately the economies of these countries provide little occupational opportunity for their citizens, and that is why nearly 900,000 have left the Dark Continent to settle in the States. There were times that it felt like half of that number personally asked me to help them secure a visa to America. The actionable point I am making here is that this anecdotal evidence refutes the insinuations in the Bell Curve and suggests very strongly that skin color is not a causal factor in the perpetuation of the black-white academic achievement gap. If not, then uh, what is? ***********0066cc]African immigrants out-graduate American Caucasians and Asians
Not surprise. All of my professors are Africans. In fact, the africans are a big step ahead of most so-called african american (native born) here.
Because most of the smartest Africans, those with the qualifications and skills to make a huge difference, work in the West for Western Corporations and institutions. The finest African professors are either in Belgium, France, Britain, Canada or USA etc. and so are the best doctors and engineers etc. There's a brain drain of the African continent and all the Africans are tempted by the high paying jobs the West has to offer. So if you add in the corrupted African government factors, you get an idea and the results we know. Doctors in Congo make $300 to $800 per month while anywhere in the West, they would make that much money in a week. Africa is just a continent of paradox. You have the richest continent as far as natural ressources and minerals is concerned, but where the poorest people on earth live. France has no oil, but it's economy is larger than the entire continent. Angola and Nigeria have plenty of oil, but their not as rich as Poland When you have 15 million Dutch that can produce as much wealth as an entire continent composed of 900 million people, we have a serious problem.
Machiavel, I like the way you think. Africans love learning. They love the challenge of being better than their competitors. I wish so-called african american blacks would have the same mindset.
Well one of the problems is it wasn't that long ago when Africa was still divided by European countries and they benefited from the natural resources. They pretty much still do. Eventually the chaos has to balance out. Also Western Europe like Japan benefited from US investment, industrialization, etc after WW2. Someone has to come and take control in some of these countries.Once you get rid of the most destructive corruption then they can have more powerful economies.Constant wars, attacks on oil supply lines, government talking all the money, etc.A country can't be stable with that much corruption.US tried some change in Somali but failed and hasn't attempted to repeat that mistake in other African countries. Say what you want about the US. But its responsibility for building every powerful economy in the world. Western Europe,China,Japan,South korea, etc.US could do the same thing in Africa but thats not happening during these times.
Very good question Out of the 20 best universities in this world, 17 are American Universities. Out of the world top 50 Universities, the US has 35 of them. And yet, despite an army of specialists, experts in every fields, America is in a big mess.
Wow, I just received a negative rep for the following post I was actually praising America indirectly and proving that even the best at everything could be in a big mess To whoever wrote this: I am here because I can and because this a land of immigrants. Unless you're a Native American and indigeneous to the US, you can't really ask people "Why they are here"? Christ, there are some Americans in France and Congo who complain about the mess of these countries are in, and no one ask them these silly questions.
As a K-12 teacher in school comprised of mostly African-American students from low-income families, I can tell you the correlation is not skin color, but poverty which affects student scores. There are plenty of poverty-stricken caucasians who fair just as poorly on state test scores. A person who comes from a family that has lived in poverty for generations is less likely to succeed academically. It is not because these individuals are any less intelligent, but because their basic needs are not being met. How can anyone concentrate in class when they are: hungry, worried about a drug-addicted parent, homeless, abused, sleep-deprived, etc?
