    A rant:

I arrived in New Orleans in 1996...and tried to donate blood...you know give back to my American Blacks. I try.

They (the white nurses) detected the guttural accent (I hadn't toned it down then) and asked where I was from. I said Nigeria. They said they couldn't take my shit...may have parasites from malaria and all that...I'm like ok...whatever...so I asked what country in Africa was exempt...they said Egypt. Go figure.

In 2002 or so, I had sex with a native New Orleanian..."biracial" lady. With protection...you know?

Yesterday, she's on MSN talking to me...she says she tried to give blood in Baton Rouge...you know..help the Black folk. She tries too. They (white nurses) asked all kinds of questions...you can imagine...then THEY ASKED IF SHE HAD SLEPT WITH AN AFRICAN...she said yeah...THEY ASKED WHERE THIS EVIL AFRICAN WAS FROM...she said Nigge..I mean...Nigeria. Heh! THEY SAID SHE WAS DISQUALIFIED...B/COS NIGERIA IS ON AN AIDS LIST. So now...'cos of yours truly she can't ever give blood.

Am I shocked? NAHHHH. But...intra-red blood cell parasites aside...doesn't this taking no blood policy form a "high risk country" in a "high risk continent" sorta kinda apply to the USA...whites (don't believe the hype) and blacks (get this all the time in med school classes...blacks got ALL the diseases) included? :?

    I'm just saying...

    So what y'all think?

    P.S.

WHAT is up with the US patent #5676977? :D

    P.P.S.

Three HIV/AIDS test in two years and STILL negative...just added that for perspective.

    Yes,

Blacks get ALL the diseases. It's a bunch of B.S. This is very common to what happens to Black Americans, Black Caribbeans, and Africans--the sky is always falling. Always quoting statistics (on anything) to skew perception about Black Americans and others of African descent without giving out the full story and never talking about the positive. That is why I have become totally distrustful of magazines, newspapers, and the news when they talk about people of African descent, including some of OUR own media outlets and leaders who have fallen for the game. Usually I go to the sources--U.S. Labor Statistics, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Educational Statistics, and etc... You find out what is quoted in the popular media is carefully picked out of a set of stats, these stats gives a different light to the same situation.

What happened to you is just outright racism and ignorance.

    Peace.

I have given blood before and they never asked me that.

They did ask me about unprotected sex, tattoos, drug usage, any illnesses or fevers within the last [I forgot the time frame].

I think you ran into a nurse with an issue.
Maybe things have changed since the last time I gave blood but that sounds weak to me.

Lucifer, you're my boy, and you are more than a man, you're a concept...but o Angel of light, I don't think there is any racism in that!

In 2000, back in Europe, one of my exes who is from Denmark tried to give blood in Aarhus, Denmark...she is "very white" :) and as Danish as it gets (u know her Luce!), and they asked her all sorts of questions (questions they ask every one who wants to give blood anyway)...and when she said she had had sex with an African guy from Cameroon, she couldn't give blood...too much of a risk, and medically I have to agree with that!!!!

Now I don't agree with the statement that Blacks have got all the diseases, but for the blood donating incident, I don't see any foul play!!

    Peace

You don't see foul play? How can you deny someone from dominatingblood because of their race, skin colour, where they come from, etc? AIDS has no eyes. It can and does affect anyone, anywhere. Black americans are getting infected as fast as blacks in africa.

Besides, don't they test the blood before giving it to someone? If someone was found wrong with the blood, throw it out. Isn't that how it works?

    Lucifer, that's terrible.

When I was pregnant with Imade and having my first blood tests, the midwife had to "book me in" which meant asking questions about family history etc. When it got to the child's father's name, she said "Oh, that's different, where is he from?". When I replied that he was Nigerian. She said "That reminds me, we now offer HIV/AIDS testing if you want it" - and then wrote it on my booking in form!

A few months ago, Imade had a rattly chest so I took her to the doctor, not the lovely Dr. Okoro that I usually see but someone else. He took one look at her and asked if she had been with people who had TB. I asked why he would think that and he said "Well, her father is clearly from somewhere else".

Ignorant bastards. No doubt I will get the same shit when baby Nneka is born. Oh, and your Egypt comment has reminded me of something. When pregnant with Imade, I had to go into Accident and Emergency at the local hospital. An Egyptian docotr treated me and he was lovely! He said he wanted me to call his department when I'd had Imade so he could come and have a look at my "Lovely chocolate baby". He then gave me his wife's number so I could make friends with other mothers!

Damn Tash...you too? Welcome to da club.

Nneka? Awwwwwwww. Dis Igbo man sef!

What're YOUR ENGLISH names for the kids?

Well, as you know Lucifer, as soon as you're with a Nigerian you ARE Nigerian! And your child, well it belongs to every Nigerian! If I had a Naira for everytime a Nigerian has referred to Imade as "their daughter/their pikin", I'd have enough to buy 20 sacks of fufu!

Imade has an English name - Titania, Queen of the fairies and Shakespear's A Midsummer Nights Dream. Nneka doesn't yet have an English name, only another Nigerian name, which both she and Imade share.

2 girls 22 months apart - I must have been wicked in a previous life!

I must also add that the thought of a hot Nigerian rolling up his sleeve to give blood, or just generally flash his flesh is enough to get me going - big time! Combined with the accent it's enough to make me weep!

    One more thing, Tash...

    WEEP? Or weep...vaginally?

People, one reason we (Black ppl) will NEVER go very far is that we are STUCK in so many mental prisons, and one of them is our omnipresent view of racism!! I know I'm going to be under heavy fire bcoz I say this but hey, it's my opinion!!

Lucifer is in the medical field, and I've roamed between Medicinal Chemistry and Biology all my life...If you have been in sub-saharan Africa, you have been exposed to high risk of MALARIA infection...I'm not talking about AIDS

And do you know how they would remove the plasmodium (malaria parasite) from your blood?? no way bcoz it lives INSIDE your blood cells!!!!

Damn it this conversation already pisses me off...even though they test the blood, they can't take a chance with malaria or with anybody who had a risky behavior (drugs, needles, unsafe sex, in the past three months etc...)

OF COURSE, I'm not in any case for refusing to take blood from someone just bcoz of their color or origin...but if there is a risk, there is a risk!!

It's just as if some black person came to me and told me "Hey, take my blood, I'm a heroin addict" and I had to accept for fear of ppl saying I'm discriminating!!

She refused his blood not bcoz he is black but bcoz he had been exposed to malaria!!!! nothing to do with racism!!!

In the US, there is a risk of "catching" CMV and HCV via blood and blood products even transplant organs (CMV). The CDC or some such organisation will probably say it's very looooow. But it's there...

There is a high incidence and prevalence of HIV and AIDS in the US as well.

    So...

Rather than putting out a "Black" List...heh...there needs to be a focus on purifying all blood of all disease agents...

Until then, the US should be on that list...consistency I say...at the very least...

What do you mean by Black people's omnipresent view of racism?

One of the effects of long term systematic 'isms is a belief that it's not an 'ism when it is an 'ism.

Because HIV is colorblind, to tie HIV to a race or country or sexual proclivity is the ever dreaded 'ism.

Not all things between different races are racist but what was described sure as hell sounds like it to me.

HIV knows no race and that fact that me as a black man was never asked the question or treated like Mr. Morningstar was treated at least causes one to think something “else” is going on.
    No?

I totally understand why they asked me the questions they did when I gave but again They never asked me everything they asked Mr. Lucifer.

My Red Cross nurse was a 50 something white lady.

You know...a black person does bad work and gets fired: RACISM

A black person gets criticized: RACISM

A black person gets anything done to them that they don't like, by a white person: RACISM!!

We see racism everywhere...not that it isn't very PRESENT, but according to me it weighs waaaay too much on our minds for us to "move on"!!

And why is everyone focusing solely on AIDS??? re-read Lucifer first post...the main problem seemed to have been his exposure to MALARIA...I have had malaria...it's still in my blood...I TOTALLY understand why they wouldn't take his blood...

Now Luce, I agree with you for all these other diseases that the US probably should also be on a "black" list...no doubt!!!

That still doesn't mean that the lady who took care of u there was racist...

Anyway this seems like a hopeless discussion...so Luce, just go and admire Chigirl's mesmerizing hips man!!! :)
