The beginning of the plot reminded me of another African movie, a Malian classic made in 1975. The name of that movie is "Den Musow" ("teenage girl" or "little girl" in Bambara). The main character, who is a deaf-mute girl, is actually raped by her date and her father kicks her out when he finds out she's pregnant. The girl's mother has no say in the matter. The director of Den Musow was Souleymane Cisse who actually studied cinematography in the Soviet Union, and I believe that either the movie was banned, or he was jailed... He later wrote: "I made my main character deaf-mute to show that in our society, a woman does not have a right to speak".
