Step up a big hit at the box office so the sequel comes out 2 years later and back to the big screen. Save the last dance was a big hit at the box office the sequel comes out 5 years later and straight to t.v. & dvd. Both movies have alot in common, but 1 difference is step up is about same race couples and save the last dance is about interracial bm, ww couples. A difference that seems to have made the difference. Just goes to show at times no matter how successful a movie is, hollywood calls the shots and not the american public on what haves an ONGOING & FULL success.
Okay now here's the difference... The studios immediately put together a sequel for Step Up and if I'm not mistaken is even using one or two characters from the first film. The movie is still fresh in the mind of the audiences. Save the Last dance sequel didn't get off the ground until over five years after the first film came out....and this was after the unsuccessful attempt to make it into a series. It was no longer al that fresh by this time. And it was determined to be so awful that it went straight to DVD. Now could race had played a major role? Yes. But at the same time maybe it was the quality of the actual film that determined its straight-to-DVD fate. I mean its possible. Its very easy to make a bad film out of a sequel to a so-so teenager flick. And to be fair Hollywood not only attempted a sequel of the film but attempted to amke a series out of it. Without a question I am a believer of the fear that Hollywood and America have with the idea of TV films and shows centering around a BM/WF coupling. But I think its best to go after the legit examples of this form of discrimination by Hollywood. This one is a little too flimsy. But then again since I think both movie franchises are horrible in the first place maybe my bias and indifference are talking.
I see what your saying, but what Im saying is that it was on purpose from the get-go, It is very rare that when something is a hit that the studios don't jump on it in a hurry to make a sequel and versions of, that didn't happen with "Save the last dance", but did with "Step up".
