Swazi- No offense but you should know better, you come from South Africa. Haven't you seen a dirt poor African kids who are academically gifted but dont have the opportunity to acheive their full potentials?
Being from higher class does not equal being intelligent. If that is the case then Paris Media Whore Hilton should have obtained JD+MD+Phd+MBA+MS at the age of 26 from Harvard.
Genetics is complicated and it's a funny business. Just coz you parents are gifted doctors does not necessairly mean you are going to be a smart doctor. In fact, you might not even make it to med school, heck you might even flank out of college.
Look at Michael Jordan's elder son. MJ-Undoubtfully the greatest BB player to grace this earth, but his elder son was struggling as a walk on in U of I urbana campus. One would say, MJ's son had a great super athletic genetic predisposition and a great opportunity to go with it. MJ with his celebrity friends attended most of his son's High school games and was very supportive of his son. At the end of the day, the kid was not good enough to be recruited by big name school. He went to U of I as walk on and struggled not as a starter but as 3rd string coming of the bench player, so he quit. You see, this just shows you that the kid did not inherit the right atheltic genes from MJ.
Also look at Denzel Washington, both his parents are not easy on the eyes, but they managed to create one of THE handome black cinematic stud of the 20 century. The moral of the story is two smart people do not automatically procreate a smart child, they might have higher chances than two dummies getting together but still not guaranteed. Also two great looking couples do not procreate a model looking individual. The business of genetics is funny!

I'm with you. My grandfather was an immigrant. He was self taught, read a lot, was able to speak 5 languages and was extremely worldly and knowledgeable. He came from nothing. My father came from nothing and he like my brother, ditched school a lot growing up, but both of them could walk into a class and take a test and get As having not been in there to learn. My family as a whole has produced some pretty intelligent people and no one was born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

I love to see extremely intelligent and gifted kids.

Sure two doctors have the potential to create a smarter child, but I would argue more to the fact that they have more money to send their kids to better schools, thereby upping the chance of those kids learning more. But, that's not always the case.

As for true geniuses, I don't think they come about because of better education. They're geniuses from birth, in my opinion.

Being smart and being a genius are two different things.

I totally agree with you. A lot of people can be book smart, but lack common sense. A lot of people can be extremely intelligent but weren't conditioned to go to college or what-have-you.

Excellent examples Andrae. Lots of factors play into how intelligent a person is, and it's not all genetics. I'm not honestly sure that some people are born gifted, I think it may be that everyone has the potential but only a few develop it. You have to spark a child's desire to learn, and once you do some of them are insatiable in their quest for knowledge. I think you can instill that desire in any child if you start young enough.

You talking about all sorts of giftedness; I am specifically talking about intellectual giftedness, sames as the video clip, not artistic or sports gifted. You are more likely to be intellectually gifted if your parents are from a higher educated class, usually equating to higher class. Black people are the least bothered about marrying into the same class when compared to other races.

You mention that the black kids who are academically gifted, but cant achieve their potential in African countries. Well my response to this is China & India are not stinking rich. Vast areas in China & India live in third world conditions. Trust me in my part of the world(I am from Swaziland, not South Africa btw), if you are really smart, there are scholarships to enter the education system. We have a world reknown school called Waterford Kamhlaba, open to all people of africa who are very bright. There are other similar schools in Africa. There chances of missing an academically gifted student are there, but they are as high as a lot of people think.

Well, its more likely you will produce an intellectual genius if the parents are from a high educated class. And its true, geniuses are born and not made, which again proves my point that if two people with high social standing(usually better educated), produce a child, the child is more likely to be a intellectual genius.

I love how you continue to ignore my posts. I have given you plenty of examples of where people come from humble beginnings and they turn out to be genius. I'll say it one more time good social standing might mean better education but it doesn't guarantee genius. Btw your China and India reference are completely false. China is extremely wealthy only second to the US. They have a high emphasis on education and India is fastly becoming industrialized which sheds it of it's third world status. Do you even know what third world means. Please return why you have an actual arguement to stand on.

Trust me if look long enough in history, intellectual geniuses parents were people of substance. Most intellectual geniuses are produced by parents who are educated. A doctor marrying another doctor would most likely be a middle class family. A cleaner marrying a doctor would probably still be a middle class. However the doctor marrying a cleaner (not marrying into the same class) would have a smaller chance of producing an intellectual genius. The kid could take after the cleaner, and would therefore have less potential than the kid produced by the two doctors. That is what I am trying to get across. I am not saying you have to be like a noble or something to produce a genius.

Okay, lets look at India & China's GDP per capita then: They are $2,930 and $6,549 respectively. When we compare this to an African Country like Botswana which has a GDP per capita of $14,906 we quickly realise that China and India are not that rich afterall.:smt017

Its people like yourself who are dentrimental to the black community. You confuse a robust argument with self-hating. What I am saying is true, but it seems its a bit hard for some people to swallow. Carry on living on cloud 9, and see how far you get in life. You never add anything of substance to the forum, only cheap shots.

Do you read what you write? That's exactly what your saying btw I don't know any place in the US where two doctors would just be considered middle class. Occupation doesn't always determine potential. You say we can look through history and find most geniuses came from wealthy families or families where both parents were accomplished well give some examples I did to prove my point but you convientantly ignored that. As for your arguement on the wealth of China and India of course the GDP per capita is going to be small because there are over a billion dollars in each country. Go back and look at the GDP for each country over all and compare it to the rest of the world.
