Count on Mississippians for continuing to be very narrow minded like they were 43 years ago. They have not changed the state flag because it is part of their "heritage". That flag still sucks.

There's no chance of republicans changing that law but that just proves how ass-backwards MS is. I can't wait to leave.

    I stand corrected. Sorry.
But hats off to Obama for it being close in a very, very Red State.

BTW, it just occurred to me- can you imagine trying to prevent a marriage between a man and a woman? I mean, seriously?! This isn't gay marriage here, its a MAN and a WOMAN! What every bible thumping Republican touts as 'the definition of marriage'!

In other news, the state of Mississippi has noticed that confederate flag sales have skyrocketed within the past 18 months.

Funny how Conservatives and their ilk are always talking about freedom and how the government should stay out of people's lives while at the same time putting their noses into other people's bedrooms and lives telling them who they should and should not marry.

The hypocrisy of this country really embarrasses me sometimes.

    LOL, great post Tony.

I bet Sarah Palin and the Republican challengers against Obama (Romney, Huckabee, Gingrich) would vote to make interracial marriage (especially between BM/WW) an illegal act, an act of treason.

Inbreeding in Mississippi leads to lower IQ's and mental retardation.

See my thoughts in the Politics section because i can't be fucked to rewrite an entire essay about it :smt012

Nonetheless, I do believe there's a causal relationship between the number who want interracial relationships outlawed and their favoring Palin or Gingrich. These behemoths largely speak to the sort of nihilistic, jingoistic, reactionary faux populism that the Republican Party has been bending over backwards to pander to. In many ways, they represent a Jacksonian throwback to this ridiculous nostalgia for the "better days" - you know, when "those people" knew their place.

From the way Palin even talks, she oozes anti-intellectualism as its destructive worst. The way she talks down to those "elite lamestream media types" just smacks of the most blind kind of ignorance - the kind where the sufferer doesn't recognize their ailment because they get cheered on by an equally blind and ignorant contingent. Say what you will about the GOP, but to think that a party once led by the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Cal Coolidge, Dwight Eisenhower, Everett Dirksen, Jacob Javits, Alan Simpson and even William F. Buckley is now led by such half-witted dunces such as Palin, Gingrich, Barbour, Pawlenty and Huckabee speaks volumes about their descent into the abyss of darkness.

I don't agree with virtually anything Buckley stood for, but the guy was an intellect - he could at least explain to you in reasons rooted in ration and policy understanding why a certain position is good. Now, all these Republican nonentities do is spout silly talking points that don't actually mean much in the way of logical policy implication. They all dance to the same tunes about taxes, terrorism, foreign policy, healthcare etc., spouting the same tired slimy catchphrases that should be better found on the back and sides of a car, as opposed to actual government agencies.

The only thing scarier about these buffoons is the fact that they or their ilk take the reins of government again. Make no mistake about it, Obama is no sure bet to be re-elected. The GOP is keeping the house and will probably reclaim the Senate. If the economy doesn't improve by the summer of 2012 - and there's no real indication that it will do so drastically - Obama will be vulnerable.

I would normally be dismissive of their attempts to win office, but Americans can be pretty retarded at times. I mean, we have elected wrestlers, bad actors and war criminals before, so what stops us from doing barely educated vagabonds?

Well stated. Some of those folks represent a cesspool of overflowing ignorance that has led them to behave uncontrollably ever since Barack Obama was elected to the Office of President.

Mississippi has and always will be a backwater of racial ignorance and intolerance. It is so woven into the fabric of their history.

A state whose shining accomplishment is to be synonymous with historical bigotry.
